The era of 2 GB data plan is almost over.
At this moment, the below-$50 mobile plan that comprises both voice and data, which most of us would be using, provides about 2 GB to 3 GB data. For a few additional dollars, you can “upsize” your mobile data for an additional 2 GB or 3 GB.
SingTel’s latest offering is changing their status quo—before this, they had an “upsize” package called DataX2 that adds two times more data (that means for the below-$50 plan, that’s an additional 2 GB) for an additional $5.90.
Now, for $9.90, you can triple your current data—that means the below-$50 plan will have an additional 4 GB instead of the 2GB or 3 GB.
Considering the fact that any extra GB clocked will be an additional charge of $10.70, heavy users will save more from this new “upsize package”.
But here’s the thing: with the status quo, it’s almost a certainty that other telcoms will follow suit. In fact, it looks like SingTel’s move is follow StarHub’s pricing, but this is what SingTel says: “DataX2 has been extremely well-received and is very popular with our customers, leading us to create an even more attractive offer of DataX.”
With our heavy reliance on mobile nowadays, with almost every single app taking some data, this will provide some respite for most users.
Currently, StarHub still holds the throne for the cheapest data for the below-$50 plan (after upsize), with a 6 GB plan at $48.90. M1 is at $48.80 with 5 GB while SingTel is at $52.80 with 6GB.
However, only M1 and StarHub allow an “upsize” when you’re still serving your contract—SingTel still requires a new contract to upsize.
*In our earlier edition, we mentioned that only M1 allows an “upsize” when you’re still serving your contract: that is wrong, as a staff from StarHub has confirmed with us that they also allow current customers to “upsize” without a need for a new contract. We apologize for the oversight.
