In Singapore, there are a few first-world problems that we’d kill to solve: wrong bubble tea orders, late food delivery orders and videos that take forever to load.
But usually, videos that buffer longer than the video length itself are usually free contents as the platform won’t have enough bandwidth to stream those contents. That’s what my friends usually tell me when they watch some free videos about a pizza boy delivering food to a lonely woman’s house.
When you pay for a video, you didn’t expect just a smooth watching experience: no one would bat an eye even if you expect 4K streaming.
Unfortunately, some people who spent real money to watch a JJ Lin virtual concert had to face this 1990s experience.
SISTIC Providing Refunds For People Who Bought Tickets to JJ Lin Virtual Concert But Watched a Buffering Concert Instead
Last month, it was announced that JJ Lin would be holding a virtual concert, which is supposedly the “brainchild of JJ and his team”.
The virtual concert will combine “hyper realistic virtual space with cutting edge XR technology, transcending borders and space.”
Since it’s fully virtual whereby you’ll shout at the comfort of your bedroom as JJ Lin sings live to you from miles away, the price of the tickets is more affordable: it costs $38 if you’re just watching the livestream, or up to $188 that’ll include collectable merchandise.
And like any JJ Lin concert, the tickets that include merchandise were sold out faster than you can spell his name, but you can still buy e-tickets to the livestream hours before it begins, because for the first time in any JJ Lin concert, the number of e-tickets is, I believe, unlimited.
But it seems like some people forget that while it doesn’t take up physical space, livestreaming would take up server space, too.
During the livestream, people were complaining repeatedly about how laggy the whole experience is.
It got so bad that after Sistic posted an update on the issue, the post garnered well over 1.4K comments, with many complaining about the lag.
Hours after the concert ended, Sistic issued a media statement, saying that despite “our best preparations including conducting stress tests, load tests and catering for double the anticipated demand, the Sistic team encountered unforeseen issues with our technical partner which we immediately investigated but were not able to resolve in a satisfactory manner.”
Its CEO said, “As disappointed as we are about the outcome, we believe the disappointment of JJ fans is much greater. I would like to apologise unreservedly to JJ Lin, his fans, JFJ Productions, Unusual Entertainment, Isotope Productions, partners and all crew members who worked so hard to make this highly anticipated show a reality.”
And as expected, with calls for refunds getting louder, the ticketing service provider said that they would be providing refunds to all “affected Patrons.”
Here’s their statement lest you can’t read:
JJ Lin「Sanctuary Finale」Virtual Concert
We are devastated that despite our best efforts, SISTIC was unable to resolve streaming issues with our technical partner whom we rely on for certain aspects of the live broadcast of JJ Lin「Sanctuary Finale」Virtual Concert at 8PM (GMT) on 10 July 2021.
Despite our best preparations including conducting stress tests, load tests and catering for double the anticipated demand, the SISTIC team encountered unforeseen issues with our technical partner which we immediately investigated but were not able to resolve in a satisfactory manner.
As disappointed as we are about the outcome, we believe the disappointment of JJ fans are much greater. We would like to apologise unreservedly to JJ Lin, his fans, JFJ Productions, Unusual Entertainment, Isotope Productions, Partners and all crew members who worked so hard to make this highly anticipated show a reality.
SISTIC will be offering a refund to all affected Patrons, as well as the opportunity to view the JJ Lin [ Sanctuary Finale ] Virtual Concert at a later date. Patrons will be notified by email with further details.
But at least we get to know that it’s definitely a live concert and not a pre-recorded one, as JJ Lin himself acknowledged the buffering issue during the concert, and said that he would communicate this to Sistic.
Now, if all the videos you try to watch online are laggy, then the problem might indeed be your internet connection instead of…er, Sistic.
