A showcase of kindheartedness in a traffic accident sadly turned fatal for one such good Samaritan.
Shin Min Daily News reported that the accident took place at around 2 am on 28 July.
It happened on the Seletar Expressway (SLE), near the Lentor Avenue exit.
Driver Dies Trying to Help in SLE Accident
43-year-old private hire driver Mr Zhang (transliterated) was heading home after work, travelling on the leftmost lane of the SLE.
Suddenly, a motorcycle collided with his right rear door, denting it and sending the motorcyclist crashing to the ground.
Mr Zhang parked his car on the left road shoulder and alighted to help the fallen motorcyclist.
Another driver pulled to a halt in front of Mr Zhang’s car to help, as did a second motorcyclist.
As Mr Zhang and the other motorcyclist were moving the initial victim to the side of the road, he heard a sudden loud noise.
When he looked up, he saw that the second driver who had stopped to help had been run over by a black car and fallen on the rightmost lane of the SLE.
As Mr Zhang was focused on helping the injured motorcycle rider, he did not see what led the victim to cross the expressway.
One more car stopped in the middle of the road to render assistance, only to then be involved in a minor collision with yet another vehicle.
Loved One of the Deceased Cried While Identifying Body
By 2:50 am, the scene of the accident was swarming with police officers, who cordoned two lanes and the left road shoulder, leaving only the leftmost lane of the SLE for any driver passing by.
Dashcam footage from Facebook showed two cars parked on the left road shoulder, likely belonging to Mr Zhang and the victim, as well as a blue police tent covering the body of the deceased on the rightmost lane.
The police stated that the 35-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 31-year-old motorcyclist who had fallen was taken to the hospital.
It was also reported that a 30-year-old woman, a loved one of the deceased, was in his car at the time of the accident.
The police requested her to identify his body after the fatal collision, and Mr Zhang described her as sobbing in grief at the sight.
Mr Zhang told Shin Min that he was greatly saddened by the death of the kind-hearted driver, who he described as a hero for trying to help.
He hoped the public would acknowledge the deceased’s compassion and bravery and told other motorists to take care of themselves too when trying to save others.
It’s a sobering reminder about the dangers of the road, and that those who are helping are still putting themselves at risk.
A 32-year-old driver is cooperating with the police investigation.
