Soh Rui Yong is once again on the headlines, and this time, it’s not because he triggered another lawsuit or that he’s issuing another challenge, but it’s because he broke something: the national marathon record.

Soh Rui Yong Broke National Marathon Record & Became The First S’porean to Qualify for Asian Games Marathon
On 5 Dec, Soh broke his own national marathon record while he was competing in the Valencia Marathon.
Soh logged an official timing of two hours, 22 minutes and 59 seconds, about a minute faster than his timing at the 2019 Seoul Marathon.
With this record, he also met the Singapore Athletics nomination standard timing for the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. The nomination standard timing for the Games is two hours, 23 minutes and 42 seconds.
As a Facebook lover, Soh had to show his new achievements on his page with the caption, “I trained hard then I raced hard. You can do it too!”
In the caption, he also mentioned the wind brought the race’s level of intensity to the next one.
Kenya’s Lawrence Cherono won the race with a timing of 2:05:12.

10,000m Qualifying Mark
Before Soh competed in this Valencia Marathon, he clocked 31 minutes and 28.67 seconds in Singapore Athletics’ All Comers 5 meet 10,000m event.
The qualification mark for the race was 31 minutes, 44.14 seconds.
Previous Records
Previously, Soh was the first Singaporean marathoner to win back-to-back SEA Games gold medals in 2015 and 2017. However, in 2019, his nomination was rejected by the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) due to his “poor attitude and behaviour”. Before they arrived at that decision, Soh had clashed with SNOC on various occasions.
This included the promotion of his personal sponsors on social media during the Games. He was issued a formal warning for the breach of regulations.
In addition to these records, he is the current holder of the national records for 5,000m, 10,000m and the half marathon. In Sep, he also set the national best time for 2.4km run, which, well, is still up for debate.
Future Plans
In the future, you may see Soh in the courtroom, not because some other athletic decided to sue him but as someone’s lawyer.
Recently, Soh announced on his Facebook page that he was accepted into University College London. He will be leaving for London next year where he will begin his studies for three years.
He does not intend to give up running. He said he will look for a 10,000m (race) in England and try to beat his national record.
As of now, we’re not sure if he’d be running to London or taking the plane.
