Until a few weeks ago, the word “sovereign” only had two definitions:
- a supreme ruler, especially a monarch
- possessing supreme or ultimate power
Now, a third definition has been added to that list.
3. an enraged woman in a purple tank top making illogical proclamations
Yes, we’re all familiar with the Sovereign Lady of Shunfu.
The woman, 41-year-old Paramjeet Kaur, previously faced four charges, including three under the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) Act:
- Leaving her house to eat in front of a food stall
- Not wearing a mask in public
- Public nuisance
- Assault
She said some strange things in court, and was remanded in IMH for psychiatric observation for two weeks.
But because she’s such a prolific law-breaker, the woman still has two charges to face.
And being the never-ending fountain of strange statements that she is, Kaur continued to do what she does best.
Sovereign Went Back to Court for 2 More Charges; Continued to Say Weird Things
On Tuesday (19 May) Kaur returned to court, this time wearing a face mask.
Her two remaining charges are:
- not wearing a mask on 26 Apr at a hawker stall along Upper Thomson Road
- failing to report a change in residence
After the charges were read to the 41-year-old, she was asked several times if she understood the charges.
All she had to do was say yes.
Maybe even a gentle nod of the head.
But no, this is the Sovereign Lady of Shunfu we’re talking about.
Instead, she replied: “I’m a living woman … I reserve my right to remain silent.”
And when she was asked to state her full name, she said, “I go by Pam.”

Refusing to say your entire name goes so far beyond the bounds of regular stubbornness that it’s almost admirable.
According to CNA, Kaur was represented by lawyer Anil Singh, who took over her case from Satwant Singh.

The 41-year-old is out on bail for S$10,000. Her mother, who was in the court gallery, will be posting the bail.
Kaur: Thanks, mum!
Mum: Why can’t you just be normal and follow the rules?

Kaur: Because I’m a sover-
Mum: Oh shut up
Kaur’s case will next be heard on 2 June 2020.
Kaur’s lawyer asked that his client not be present for the next hearing unless she had more charges to face, and the court accepted.
So, we may not hear more odd things from the Sovereign Lady of Shunfu for a while.
“I’m Not A Person”
In case you’re a character from a soap opera and you developed amnesia after banging your head against a door, here’s what made this woman famous.

In early May, a video of a spat between a woman in purple (Kaur) and several bystanders made the rounds on social media.
Kaur was caught without a face mask, and bystanders were reminding her of the circuit breaker laws.
Instead of accepting her wrongdoing, Kaur said she’s a “sovereign”, referring to a movement where people who see themselves as “sovereign citizens” believe they are above all laws.
Yes, it’s as irrational as proclaiming “I’m amazing at football” and expecting Manchester United to start paying you a million dollars a month to play for them.
Puzzled, a bystander replied, “If you’re a person in Singapore you have to follow the rules of Singapore.”

To which Kaur retorted: “That’s the thing, I’m not a person”.
To be fair, that statement is hard to argue with at the moment.
With how unintentionally entertaining she is, it’s almost a shame that we won’t get to hear more from her.
Almost.
