Scammers may come in all shapes and sizes (and attire)
…but deep down, they share the same philosophy – to take advantage of unknowing victims for their own benefit. These people prey on easier targets such as the elderly who live alone, with no help to discern right from wrong.
That said, you’re never too old or young to fall into the hands of said scammers.
With reference to The Straits Times, scammers have jumped at the opportunity to deceive in-lieu of the many reported cases of fire in housing estates the past month.
SP Group advises the public to be more vigilant
Just yesterday (24 July 2019), SP Group posted an advisory on their Facebook page.
According to the post, there have been individuals who have been passing off as employees from SP Group and selling fire extinguishers from door to door.
The company then highlighted to the public that they do not sell products in the first place, and confirmed that their staff “do not conduct door-to-door sales”.
On top of that, they urged the public to ask and verify the identification of the employees in question and avoid furnishing them with personal particulars, when faced with such a situation.

For you info, SP Group is an energy utility company with the bulk of their work revolving around operating and distributing both electricity and gas. This means they truly have no business with the sale of fire extinguishers.
This isn’t the first time scammers have impersonated employees and approached the public under the disguise of conducting checks and selling products from door-to-door.
Earlier this month, an 84-year-old was inches from getting cheated of S$47K.
The moral of the story is this: always stay informed, and don’t believe others so easily.
