SPF Said The ‘Loud Booms’ Heard Yesterday Could Be Due to SAF Activities

Yesterday morning, between 11:30 a.m. to about 12:00 p.m., some people in Singapore allegedly heard several loud “booms”—they were so loud, windows rattled and the ground allegedly shook.

Some said that Thanos had just farted, while others claimed that aliens have landed. A few thought that it was just a loud thunder.

While a majority of people who heard it were in the south of Singapore, namely Orchard and Bukit Timah, netizens have claimed that they heard it even when they were elsewhere.

I, for one, didn’t hear it in Bukit Batok.

SPF Responded Swiftly

About two hours after the initial report, SPF responded, claiming that they were investigating with this update on Facebook:

The Police have been alerted to several reports of various loud sounds heard at approximately 11.30am at various locations at Orchard and Bukit Timah. We are in the midst of determining the cause of the loud sounds.

Soon, an hour later, it was revealed that there were no injuries or abnormalities as they posted this update:

Update 1: The Police have conducted checks on the ground and nothing incriminating has been found. There have been no abnormalities and injuries reported.

And yesterday night, at 10:04 p.m., they posted a final update:

Final update: The Police have verified with MINDEF and ascertained that the loud sounds heard this morning could be related to planned detonation activities carried out by the SAF at the Southern Islands that started at 11.45am and ended at 1.30pm. The public are advised not to be alarmed.

Here’s the full post:

In other words, they managed to track down what happened within 13 hours; kudos to them, and all the OT hours they’ve to clock, just to inform us that Thanos hadn’t farted after all.

Planned Detonation Activities Carried Out by the SAF

It’s unknown what “planned detonation activities” mean, and why the public wasn’t being notified before these activities.

But anyways, anyone who has been through the army as a combat-fit soldier would have thrown a grenade before; and based on personal experience, it does sound like an extremely loud thunder that shook the ground even when we were far away.

But of course, a grenade going off won’t be so loud that people in Tampines could hear it.

Also, do note that SPF indicated specifically that the loud sounds “could be related” to the detonation activities; however, with the same timing and the fact that majority of the people who heard it are in the south of Singapore, the explanation is very plausible.

Which leads to the next point:

Singaporeans Believe We’re in Good Hands

I don’t know about you, but a foreigner might just freak out and hide under a table once he or she hears this.

(Though a male Singaporean might lie on the floor face-down and shout “Grenade! Grenade!” while covering his neck)

Most Singaporeans merely joked online (me included), claiming that it was Thanos lah, someone eating something spicy lah or aliens lah.

Not sure if that’s good or bad: on one hand, we don’t believe anything bad would happen here, which means our authorities have everything under control.

On the other hand…have we become too complacent?
