In life, there are a few common-sense rules you may want to follow:
- If it’s too good to be true, it probably is
- Jumping from the second-floor balcony is a bad idea
- Don’t put a playpen into a washing machine, especially if it isn’t your washing machine
Unfortunately, not everyone got the memo.
Everything About the “Spinning” Playpen in a Sembawang Laundromat
On 10 Sep 2023, a Facebook user shared an incident she’d heard from her friend, including several videos.
According to her friend, they were near a laundromat when they heard what sounded like glass exploding.
Upon rushing into the shop to investigate, they noticed soapy water flooding the floor.
They also saw an object spinning uncontrollably from within one of the washing machines.
The glass panel on the washing machine had broken, and glass shards and soapy water were haphazardly flung around the shop.
In the video, a woman could be heard asking others to stand further away.
8World News managed to identify the laundromat in the video.
The incident happened at the Mr Wash outlet located at Canberra Crescent.
Playpen Owner Stepped Up to Ask for Videos to be Deleted
A woman, believed to be the owner of the playpen, stood forward to ask for videos of the incident to be deleted.
She had also requested that the videos not be posted online.
While the friend deleted videos that identified anyone, the rest were kept and eventually shared.
There was also a CCTV in the shop, the friend noted.
The friend then told the woman that she shouldn’t have thrown a stroller into the washing machine.
The woman, however, replied that it wasn’t a stroller but a playpen.
According to the friend’s observations, the woman was at the laundromat with her husband.
The couple seemed well-educated and spoke fluent English.
Washing Machine Spat Out Playpen On Its Own
The husband had allegedly tried to pull out the playpen and stop the machine to no avail.
As for why no one else stepped up to help, the friend explained that the scene was chaotic and the shop was mostly filled with children and the elderly.
The floor was soapy as well and shards of glass were flying around.
Eventually, the washing machine spat out the playpen on its own.

Owner Looking into Repair Costs
The owner of the laundromat, Lin Qiyi, said he is not looking into taking legal action.
The couple had said they would compensate him for the damage. He is currently looking into the cost of repair and replacement for the washing machine.
This is the first time Lin had heard of such an incident at a self-served laundromat and the glass on the washing machines is supposed to be very strong.
