It’s all too familiar to us, the rite of passage in Singapore – studying hard, graduating from university, getting a stable and well-paying job.
Bonus if you can “BTO” in your 20s.
While that may be the roadmap for most of us, like most other things, it doesn’t apply to all of us.
Local actress Tan Kheng Hua says her daughter has yet to find a full-time job despite graduating earlier this year, and Tan is proud of her for that.
No life plans (but in a good way, supposedly)
Before the SJWs bring their spears out, here’s what the 59-year-old veteran actress has to say.
In an Instagram post uploaded by Tan on Friday (7 Oct), the actress said that not only does her daughter not have a full-time job, she also does not have a “well laid out plan as to when she’s going to buy her own place or get married or anything, for that matter”.

This however, does not seem to bother Tan.
The actress even added that “it is exactly the sort of state I encourage her to be in at the moment”.
Food for thought, Singaporean parents?
Charting her own course
The local actress gives a slew of reasons for why she’s proud of her 24-year-old daughter, Shi-An, although she isn’t exactly following the conventional Singaporean path (well, but she is living the Singaporean dream).

The key reason for the doting mother’s statements is precisely that – her daughter is not “blindly following familiar Singapore paradigms for young university graduates”.
Instead, Tan directs her attention to how Shi-An chooses to chart her own course in “part-time gigs in a variety of fields to allow her a lifestyle she wants for herself”.
Shi-An has followed her parents into the acting industry, her father being the actor Lim Yu-Beng.

Aside from acting, Shi-An also does freelance graphic design work.
Tan also adds that her only child “actively pursues and discovers the depths and validity of her passions”, something that not many of us can claim to even find the time for today.
Aside from that, Tan also praises her daughter for various positive character traits, and also for taking care of both her family homes as well as her grandparents.
Were you really expecting that not to be a reason for why Tan is so proud of her daughter? It’s filial piety, one of the shiniest accolades you can earn in Singapore.
Tan also emphasises the closeness of their relationship as something she’s grateful for, noting that: “She has allowed me to keep growing up and discovering myself and my life in all directions”.

The proud mother wrapped up the caption by encouraging Shi-An to “Fly. Flex. Be Free, Self-Sufficient, Interested and Engaged” while also assuring that the family will always support her, no matter what.
A “Rich Dad Poor Dad” Situation?
Most comments on the actress’ love letter to her daughter showered the pair with love and support, while others were a little less content.
One comment criticised the post for being tone-deaf, saying: “We get that your family is rich but no need to rub it in people faces. Most graduates do not have the luxury of sitting around doing nothing and relying on mummy’s name to land acting side gigs”.
Another comment echoed the same sentiment, saying: “I think everyone would want to take it easy like that. But guess what not everyone has a well off enough family to afford to not look for a job asap lol”. The comment also criticised the actress for being disconnected from reality.
A bulk of the online uproar came from netizens’ remarks of Tan being “out of touch”, alleging that her statements come from a position of privilege.
