There was a study done on the elderly in Singapore back in 2015. It was found that one in 10 Singaporeans above the age of 60 has dementia.
And by 2030, the number of elderly above 60 years old having dementia is predicted to be a whopping 80,000.
Yup, and you could be one of them.
Which is why this came about.
For those who keep saying that Yishun is where all the weird, the scary and the strange of Singapore congregate…
And I totally get where you’re coming from because they even had a Lord Voldemort loan shark.
Eat your words because something great (besides the food) is coming here.
Imagine this.
So there you are, walking along the streets when you come across a lovely old man who seemed totally lost.
You want to step forward and help but you’re in a rush. So you console yourself, saying that someone else will help him and you move along with a heavy heart.
Sounds familiar? Well, now you can go ahead and help that poor old man.
S’pore Very First 24-Hour Dementia Go-To Point
On 10 Sep 2017, it was reported that Singapore’s very first 24/7 “dementia go-to” point is launched in Yishun.
That’s right, always open like 7-eleven.
Located at the Sree Narayana Mission Nursing Home in Yishun, members of the public can bring lost and wandering people to the facility at any time of the day.
Yishun Dementia Go-To Point Not Just A Drop-Off Point
And if you think that it’s simply a drop-off point with a funky name, think again.
The Sree Narayana Mission Nursing Home in Yishun, other than holding on to lost people also pride themselves on being a community resource for dementia-related cases.
You can go to them for more information on dementia, caring for people with dementia, attend classes and even be linked to relevant services who can help.
In other words, if you want to know if playing mahjong can slow down dementia, they’re the best people to ask.
Besides Google, that is.
Yishun’s Dementia Go-To Point is One of 58 Drop-Off Points On The Island
I bet most, if not all of you don’t even know there are other dementia go-to points around the island.
58 of them, in fact. And they were launched back in January 2016.
You can find more information about Dementia go-to points here.
So what’s the end goal here?
Believe it or not, the government has great plans for Yishun.
They want to make Yishun a dementia-friendly community and has other programmes like Forget Us Not initiative by Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and the Lien Foundation.
Currently, Yishun is one of five dementia-friendly communities in Singapore together with Hong Kah North, Bedok, Queenstown and MacPherson.
Come, let us make Yishun great again. Finally.
