There’s always a risk of injury during sports.

It’s easy to tell someone to “be careful” but in a field where everyone is on an adrenaline high, things happen.

Even pre-game, someone could get a cramp or an injury from elsewhere.

The question is: do you drop out or keep going despite it?

Obviously, if it’s something as serious as head trauma you should stop immediately and get checked.

But would you play on with a broken finger?

Especially when you’re a goalkeeper?

Passion Over Pain

Sometimes all you need is the will to keep winning.

Tampines Rovers goalkeeper Syazwan Buhari, 27, was having a warm-up session for the Komoco Motors Singapore Cup final on 2 November.

Normal right? A nice and relaxing practice before the real game.

However, 30 minutes before the actual match, Syazwan sustained an injury which left his pinky bent out of shape.

Okay ouch, that’s painful as heck to even LOOK at!

This injury would have probably sent anyone into a panic, dropped out and go and get checked immediately.

But not Syazwan.

Despite the initial shock, he popped the finger back and taped it onto his ring finger.

In fact, he went onto make some of the most amazing plays that day.

Mind Over Body

The things that the guy do with a broken finger I can barely do with two hands.

In the finals match against Warriors F.C., he managed to save a penalty shot from their forward Sahil Suhaimi with only four minutes left.

The goal was scored eventually but the feat was amazing nonetheless.

Including that penalty, Syazwan made a total of three saves that night.

The Tampines Rovers ended up winning with a score of 4-3 that day, taking home the entire event.

When asked about not substituting, he mentioned that in the finals such a choice could affect the outcome of the game and that he did not want to miss out on playing it.

And I guess sometimes that drive just pushes you to win everything.

Of course, an injury is still an injury and Syazwan went to Raffles Hospital where X-rays revealed a suspected fracture.

While we are glad that he won, what made Syazwan’s story amazing was simply his drive to go on.

Still, if you got an injury and it’s extremely serious please go and get checked. Your life is always more important!
