After a hiatus in 2020 caused by the pandemic, Star Awards 2021 is back this year, festooned with twice the glitz and glamour to make up for its absence last year!

It was a night of star-studded performances, teary acceptance speeches (only for the new female celebrities) and some shockingly unexpected results as well.

Here we condense it all into 10 notable facts about Star Awards 2021 that you won’t want to miss out on, though it’s admittedly a tad boring as it went rather uneventually.

Multiple Locations Involved for Star Awards 2021

This year’s Star Awards took place at a few different locations: the HSBC Rain Vortex at Jewel Changi Airport, the Shiseido Forest Valley and Changi Airport Terminal 4.

Montages of stars Rui En, Elvin Ng, Desmond Tan, Carrie Wong, Qi Yuwu, Xu Bin, Chantalle Ng, Rebecca Lim, Zoe Tay, Pierre Png, Chen Han Wei, Ian Fang, Bonnie Loo, Felicia Chin and James Seah were played, featuring the beloved actors and actresses strutting across the red carpet with a stately Singapore Airlines Airbus A350-900 cutting a striking presence in the background.

Talk about style.

And yes, those areas were closed for the event. Not that it matters since the place is now as empty as our bank accounts.

Hosts, Performances and Special Appearances

The Walk Of Fame was hosted by Li Teng, Vivian Lai and Desmond Ng, while the awards ceremony was hosted by Guo Liang and Quan Yi Fong. There were musical performances throughout the show, with Joanna Dong and Hong Kong pop star Gigi Leung gracing the event with their musical prowess..

Special appearances on video were also made by guest stars Ella Chen, Kevin Tsai, Matilda Teo, Chung Hsin-ling, James Wen, Lau Dan, Lawrence Cheng, Gordon Lam and Sandra Ng.

And in case you wonder if Ella came to Singapore…

Socially Distanced Stars

Not forgetting that we’re still living amid a pandemic, the attendees were divided into separate seating areas in line with social distancing measures and wore masks when they were off camera.

Presenters and guests from overseas made their appearances virtually, kind of like a zoom meeting.

Introduction of New Award

A new award was introduced to Star Awards 2021 for the first time ever: Best Radio Programme.

The award went to The Breakfast Quartet of Love 97.2FM’s Mark Lee, Chen Biyu, Marcus Chin and Dennis Chew. Mark Lee has joked earlier that they won’t go back to work this morning if they didn’t clinch the award.

Well, the threat “works”.

Stiffer Competition

Did you know that nominees actually faced tougher competition this year? This is because the number of nominees for each category was increased from five to seven, in order to compensate for the absence of an awards ceremony last year.

Qi Yuwu and Zoe Tay for Best Actor and Actress

Qi Yuwu bagged the Best Actor award for his role in A Quest To Heal, which won Best Drama. Meanwhile, the Best Actress award went to Zoe Tay for her role as a single mother in My Guardian Angels

Zoe Tay had also won Best Actress at the previous Star Awards in 2019. This is her fourth win in total, which is the highest number of wins for this category.

But because it’s Zoe Tay, it’s still very uneventful of course.

Bryan Wong and Kym Ng for Best Supporting Actor and Actress

Bryan Wong was named Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Quest To Heal, in which he played a cunning eunuch.

Kym Ng bagged Best Supporting Actress for the role in Daybreak as a woman who had been accused of murder.

The two are better known in the entertainment industry for their hosting rather than their acting, so Bryan said that it was a “special day” indeed for both of them.

Fun fact: Did you know that both Chantalle Ng and her mother Lin Meijiao were nominees in the same category of Best Supporting Actress? This mother-daughter competition was surely watched by many, but ultimately the award was clinched by neither of them and went to Kym Ng instead.

Hot Favourite Chantalle Ng Left Empty-Handed

To the surprise and disappointment of fans of Chantalle Ng, who was in the running for Best Supporting Actress and Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes, the 25-year-old did not win any award during the night.

The young actress rose to prominence in Mediacorp drama My Star Bride, in which she played a Vietnamese bride alongside co-star Xu Bin.

Many were expecting her to easily bag one, if not both of the awards. But with her talent and popularity, there can be no doubt that this promising young starlet is going places in the industry.

Top 10 Popularity Awards Saga

This year’s Top 10 welcomed first-time winners deejay Marcus Chin, and actresses Hong Ling and Bonnie Loo.

Chantalle Ng’s absence was felt from the list, along with Felicia Chin. If Felicia had won, this would have been her tenth award, which will propel her to the status of the All-Time Favourite Artiste. Through the popularity awards, the camera panned to her multiple times, which led many to believe that she would go up on stage.

Ann Kok won a Top 10 award—this is her first award since she left Mediacorp seven years ago.

Veteran Korean actress Jin Yin Ji also bagged a Top 10 award, on top of the Evergreen Artiste award.

Dasmond Koh, Sole Winner of All Time Favourite Artiste award

Dasmond Koh had won Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes awards ten times, and so he received his All-time Favourite Artiste award, which he dedicated to his late mother.

Dennis Chew and Zheng Geping received their tenth popularity awards last night, and they will receive their All-time Favourite Artiste awards during next year’s Star Awards.
