Are you a Starhub user? Have you always lamented that StarHub, while cheaper, always seems slower than their Singtel counterpart?

Because if you do, I’ve got great news for you.

Some StarHub Customers Can Use 5G Speed From Today Onwards

From today (18 Aug) onwards, Starhub customers can now enjoy faster streaming and loading speed on StarHub’s 5G non-standalone network provided you’re using a 5G-enabled device.

This is part of a 6-month trial so don’t get too used to it since it’ll be taken away on 16 Feb 2021.

Some 5G-enabled devices include:

  • Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20 Plus
  • OnePlus 8 Pro
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus
  • Oppo Find X2 Pro
  • Motorola Edge Plus
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra
  • OnePlus 8
  • Samsung Galaxy S10 5G
  • Sony Xperia 1 II
  • Xiaomi Mi 10

It’s Just The Appetizer

Now, if you’ve been keeping up with the news, you’ll know that the Infocomm & Media Development Authority (IMDA) had awarded the final rights to operate 5G standalone networks in Singapore to Singtel and a joint venture between Starhub and M1.

So you’re wondering, hmmm, then why isn’t M1 customers enjoying 5G speeds too?

That’s because the network offered to Starhub customers to enjoy right now is the non-standalone version of the 5G network.

Non-standalone 5G networks are built off existing 4G networks, which means other than faster speeds, they don’t get to enjoy the other benefits that come along with a “true” 5G network.

Don’t Worry, It’s “Automatic”

Remember the days where you have to go into the settings and mess around with the access points?

Reader Bao: You boomer…

You don’t have to do that anymore.

Starhub says that customers who are automatically using 5G-enabled phones (those who have S20, lucky you) will be switched up to the 5G network.

The best part? It’s completely free-of-charge.

Probably because they want you to get hooked to the better user experience so when they ask you to pay for their standalone 5G network next year, you’ll be more willing to.

Currently, their 5G network only covers 53% of the island but there are plans to extend it to 70% and include areas like Ang Mo Kio, Jurong, Woodlands and the CBD.

As for other telco users, don’t worry; as the track record of Singapore has shown, what one telco does, the other telcos will follow fastly.
