Most Singaporeans would know the name Stefanie Sun.
But if for some reason you don’t, she’s a local singer and songwriter who may have appeared in quite a few NDP songs.
Shoutouts to the obviously non-biased best NDP song by the way.

And if you remember, about a year ago, she and JJ Lin collaborated on a song regarding the fight against COVID-19
It’s still up on Instagram, by the way, and you can check it out here. The two even sang a duet of one of their songs during the NDP evening show.
And while the local singer has released many albums over the years, it’s been quite a bit since her last single.
Like, 19 years kind of long. Her last single was the song “Someone” which was in her 2002 album Start.
But that all changed on 29 Jan.
Stefanie Sun Suddenly Dropped a Single She Wrote & Produced Herself; Her First in 19 Years
Sun had released a new single titled “What Remains”, or 余额, that morning.
Apparently, she wrote this song amidst the pandemic and while in isolation, which are basically a bunch of things we can all relate to from last year.
Sun said that while last year she was supposed to be going around doing concerts.

It was also to celebrate 20 years since her debut album, though the pandemic changed all that.
Instead of wasting it away, she took the chance to do some thinking, bond with her loved ones and write the song.
Which is actually already available on platforms like Spotify and iTunes.
Now if that isn’t a good way to spend isolation, producing a new single.
She also announced the song on her Instagram, where she also wished fans a good Lunar New Year.

A Song Of Many Emotions
A majority of the song is slow-paced and accompanied by the soft melody of a piano.
While it seems at first glance the song was meant to invoke sadness, Sun said that it was not done intentionally.
“What I want to bring out is a feeling of being overwhelmed with emotions.”
Her press release states that she hopes her song would be able to help people “tidy up their emotions” as they rediscover themselves.

Known For Surprising Fans
And this isn’t the first time she’s surprised fans.
Though concerts were out of the question, she managed to hold an online concert in June last year for the aforementioned first album’s anniversary.
Another show in October came after, a live-stream of an intimate gig at Pasir Panjang Power Station.
And 15 million people watched it online.
I guess this went from the circuit breaker to breaking out with a new song.
