Stubborn Woman Injured In Freak Escalator Accident After Ignoring Barricades Around It

Escalators are amazing creations.

They will save your life if the building you’re in has an inefficient lift system.

But they come with their own set of troubles.

There was a period of time when you couldn’t go past a day without hearing about some sort of freak escalator accident somewhere.

And now, you can add one more incident to the scoreboard.

Lady Lost Legs To Escalator

This incident happened on 20 July in a shopping mall in the Heilongjiang capital city of Harbin.

Viral social media footage of the incident showed a woman in her 60s “half-swallowed” by the escalator.

She was trapped waist down.

By the time firefighters managed to get to her, she had already suffered heavy injuries to her legs.

Her left leg was cut off at the knees while her right feet was mashed up by the machinery within the escalator.

Family members of the victim said that the steps “collapsed suddenly” and added that “there wasn’t even anywhere for her to jump to”.

So you’re thinking, poor lady, made in China, right?

Witnesses Say Otherwise

People who were in the mall claimed that the woman was at fault too.

The eyewitnesses said that the escalator was actually under repairs and there were barricades surrounding it.

The victim had insisted on using the escalator and removed the barricades herself.

A bystander said that she could not be stopped at all.

And when she stepped on the escalator, everything gave way.

The incident is still being investigated for the actual cause. Meanwhile, it was reported that the victim is now in a stable condition.

Escalator Incidents Happening in Singapore Too

Back in Apr 2019, an escalator at Tampines One collapsed.

Four people had just gotten onto the escalator going down from the third to the second floor when a loud bang was heard.

Reacting swiftly, the people who had gotten onto the escalator pressed the emergency stop button and survived the ordeal.

After reviewing the CCTV footage, it was realised that it could be an open stroller that had led to the collapse.

But at the end of the day, the one factor that really caused a huge majority of the escalator incidents in Singapore is this:

More than 92% of Escalator Accidents Are Due to Unsafe Behaviour

Escalator accidents aren’t uncommon; last year, there were 29 reported incidents every month.

According to the BCA, 92% of accidents happened due to unsafe behaviours such as not holding the handrails, running up escalators and the use of strollers on escalators.

In other words, it doesn’t matter where the escalator was made, China, the US, or Japan. We all need to learn to pay attention to our kids or ourselves on the escalators and make sure we behave in a safe manner.
