Less than seven hours of Sleep
A recently published study of 350 patients by SingHealth Polyclinics found that 44 per cent of Singaporeans had insufficient sleep on weekdays. Sleep insufficiency was defined as having less than seven hours of sleep a day (just seven!?), which could put the person at risk of mental, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
Insufficient sleep during weekdays was traced to be associated with the use of digital devices, home environment, employment status, and consumption habits. Frequently lack of sleep was also tied in with activities such as studying, surfing the Internet and playing online games; taking caffeinated drinks two hours before bed, or sharing a bedroom with their children. Leisure reading in the bedroom and on their bed are even twice as much to have insufficient sleep as compared to those who don’t.
Yes, folks- your bed is solely for sleeping only.
When it comes to the different ethnic groups, about six in 10 Chinese had sufficient sleep compared to about four in 10 Malays and Indians.
These findings harbours hope to raise awareness of the risk factors contributing to insufficient sleep so that steps may be taken to improve sleep and health.
As much as we are struggling to find time to fulfil at least seven hours each day, we should definitely be more aware of our health.
Better to be safe than sorry!
