A Study Showed That Male Uber Drivers Earn More than Female Drivers Due to 3 Reasons

Growing up in a country where ‘equality’ is one of the guiding principles of all kinds of decision, I have never faced situations where I felt excluded just because I’m a female.

You see, we are all given the rights to education, that’s already way better than some other countries out there, where ‘female’ and ‘education’ just don’t go well together.

Other than the fact that deep cultural roots would tend to favour male over female, Singapore is generally scoring ok when it comes to the topic of sexism.

Sexism is a pretty sensitive topic in many societies, especially when both genders are educated, but men have more chances at work and also enjoy higher salary.

According to a study by Uber and Stanford economists, in the US, male Uber driver are paid more than the females.

And that has nothing to do with their gender.

If you’re familiar with how Uber works, matches between driver and passenger, as well as the pay, are gender-blind.

Pay varies with trip length, distance, and timing of trip.

Despite having a proportionately larger amount of male drivers (more drivers to divide the total earnings among), the average hourly pay for female drivers is still lesser than that for male.

According to Recode, 27% of Uber drivers in the US are female.

Here are three reasons why this is happening:

1.When and where

Female drivers could be earning lesser because of the timing and location where they work.

There could be fewer overnight shifts, longer waiting times between each ride, and also lesser surge-price shifts as compared to men.

2.Driver experience

The longer you drive with Uber, the more you’re paid. This is because you get more familiar with the routes and times when you get paid more for each trip.

The churn rate after driving with Uber for six months is 77% for women and 65% for men.

Generally, men work for Uber longer than women. Hence, they will be more experienced and earn more using their advantage.

3.Speed

According to data in the study, male Uber drivers conduct more trips per hour.

This means that they’re actually driving faster than the female drivers.

Almost half of the earnings gap can be evidenced by the difference in driving speed!

Thoughts

Well, there isn’t much that we can disagree on, cos majority of the reasons are pretty true and relevant.

So, what is your take on this issue?

Is it really gender-stereotyping or solely based on facts?
