As the number of people infected by the deadly Covid-19 climbs higher and higher, it is inevitable that major events that attract large crowds of people will, unfortunately, have to be cancelled.
The Osim Sundown Marathon is the latest to join the list of cancelled events, which includes numerous concerts, sports events, conventions as well as mass gatherings.
Sundown Marathon 2020 Has Been Cancelled
The popular race, which started in 2008, is Asia’s largest night marathon and it takes place in Singapore every year.
A notice was posted to their official website to inform runners, as well as the public, that they would not be proceeding with the race this year in light of the coronavirus situation.
It really is a bummer, considering the fact that the event was expected to draw around 25,000 participants this year.
However, of course, health and safety always have to come first, despite how upsetting it might be sometimes.
The marathon, which was supposed to take place on 23 May 2020, attracts runners from more than 30 different countries each year.
This makes it rather risky in the light of current events, as it could lead to the possibility of imported cases of the virus which could spread rapidly among those present at the race.

Cancelled For The First Time In 13 Years
“This decision is not made lightly. This is the first time in our 13-year history that we have to cancel a race,” said the marathon’s spokesperson, Max Phua, according to The Straits Times.
“Even though this decision may derail the plans of some 25,000 runners we host year-on-year, public health and safety come first.”
The runners who have registered for this year’s race will gain direct entry into next year’s event.
If not, they can always opt for a refund as well, which will be handled by the race’s organiser, Infinitus Productions.
Many Major Sports Events Have Been Affected
The Sundown Marathon is not the first run to be affected by the Covid-19 situation.
Many other runs and sports events in Singapore have been postponed to a later date, such as the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge, which will now take place on 26 November 2020 instead of on 8 April.
Worldwide, several other sports events have been cancelled or suspended, including the NBA.
They announced that they would be suspending games “until further notice” on 11 Mar 2020 after Utah Jazz player Rudy Gobert tested positive for the virus.
The NHL was quick to follow, and announced that they would be putting their season “on pause” on Thursday, 12 March.
This was on the same day that the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the Covid-19 Outbreak as a pandemic.
I’m sorry sports fans, but it looks like you’re going to have to find something else to keep yourself entertained during these difficult times.
