If you were on social media last weekend, you’d have known about the closing of Singapore’s iconic Sungei Road Thieves Market.
Maybe you’re even there on location the past weekend, wanting to experience the bustling atmosphere of this market before it closes for good.
Or is it?
If you’re one who’s sad to see the market close down for good, you’ll love what we have to say next.
Sungei Road Thieves Market Might Be Setting Up Shop at Golden Mile Roof Carpark
According to Channel News Asia, the Sungei Road Thieves Market will be relaunching at Golden Mile Roof Carpark on Level 6.
The date of reopening? On 15 July 2017.
But only if it’s approved
This announcement came after the market’s vendors’ association pushed hard in finding alternatives to the Government’s proposal of moving the vendors to lock-up stalls elsewhere.
The chairman of the association, Mr Koh, said that 90 out of 200 vendors have expressed interest in moving to the new area.
He had come to an agreement with Golden Mile Tower a week ago and said that the deal they have was a three-month deal, subject to renewal.
But that’s not the only approval needed.
Approval from the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) is also required for the market to become a reality.
A spokesperson from URA has stated that they have not received any of such application to date.
Mr Koh said that the association has looked into fire-safety measures. They hope URA will help assist in the process of relocating Sungei Road Thieves Market.
The name of the market will remain the same.
Hawkers, on the other hand, are ready to give it a shot but don’t hold much hope because it’ll be on the sixth floor.
So don’t worry people, if all goes well, Sungei Road Thieves Market will live on. Just at a different location.
Remember to visit them (if they really operate at Golden Mile Tower) because they might just die out due to bad business. #JustSaying
