A couple in Taiwan hired two pole dancers to perform outside their son’s secondary school as a graduation celebration on 11 Jun 2025, sparking controversy and police intervention.
The performance took place outside Taichung Municipal Wanhe Junior High School just after the graduation ceremony concluded.
Pole Dancing Performance Creates Public Disturbance Outside School
The two female dancers performed outside the school compound for approximately 20 minutes.

Boys in uniform snapped photos and videos as puzzled adults and young children looked on. The couple’s son, invited to stand between the performers, appeared visibly embarrassed during the show.
The dancers later climbed onto the roofs of two sport utility vehicles, where separate poles were installed. They then continued their performance from the elevated position.
Police intervened and dispersed the gathering, citing disturbances to public order. One of the women was then seen getting off the vehicle and driving it away.
Mother Choreographed Dance to Stand Out
The boy’s mother told media that she choreographed the pole dance herself. A friend sponsored the event.
“Other parents organised various programmes for the graduation ceremony, so I wanted ours to be more creative than theirs,” said the mother, whose name was not disclosed.
“I hope this will be an unforgettable graduation gift for my son,” she added.
The boy told the media he was stunned and speechless upon seeing the pole dancing arranged by his parents. “However, considering my parents’ intentions, I chose not to object,” he said.
A parent of another student expressed concern about the performance. “It is not appropriate to hold such a performance in front of the school. They are only secondary school students,” the parent stated.

A school official noted that they do not endorse this type of celebration. The school was not aware the performance was being organised.
“We will strengthen our educational efforts and encourage parents to celebrate graduations in a more rational manner, avoiding unnecessary expenses,” said the official, who preferred to remain anonymous.
The incident sparked significant public interest on social media platforms in Taiwan and across Asia. “It is so ridiculous. Shame on the boy’s parents,” one user commented on a leading social media site.
Another user said: “You can invite the pole dancers, but you can’t host a show near a school.”
This marks the second time pole dancing events near young students have faced societal backlash in recent years.

In 2018, a kindergarten in Shenzhen, southern China, invited several pole dancers to perform at its opening ceremony, using a flagpole as a prop. The nursery’s principal defended her actions by claiming the pole dance was modern dance, but she was subsequently dismissed by the education authority following numerous parental complaints.
