Taylor Swift Has Just Endorsed Kamala Harris; Here’s Why It’s a Big Hoo-Ha

As the Presidential Election in the US draws closer, it’s no surprise that more high-profile people are endorsing the candidates. Elon Musk recently endorsed Donald Trump, and former Vice-President Dick Cheney, who is a Republican (Trump’s party), just endorsed Kamala Harris.

Those endorsements are a big deal since those are high-profile individuals who have many followers; kind of like influencers.

Today, one of the biggest influencers have endorsed Kamala Harris.

And she’s none other than Taylor Swift.

Taylor Swift Has Just Endorsed Kamala Harris; Here’s Why It’s a Big Hoo-Ha

In an Instagram post to her 283 million followers, Swift said she will be casting her vote for Harris and her running mate Tim Walz in the upcoming election.

She called Harris a “steady-handed, gifted leader” and believes the country can “accomplish so much more” if led by “calm and not chaos”.

Swift said she was “heartened and impressed” by Harris’s selection of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her vice presidential candidate, noting he has been “standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades”.

She signed off the post as “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady”, a reference to comments made by Republican VP candidate JD Vance about childless women.

And yes, of course, Swift included a photo of herself with a cat in the post.

So somehow, cats have become a motif in this election.

Taylor Swift’s Motivation Behind the Endorsement

Swift said she felt compelled to share who she was voting for after AI-generated imagery of her supposedly endorsing Donald Trump circulated online recently, which Trump appears to believe in.

This is fake and is AI-generated

“It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation,” she explained. “The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.”

In her post, Swift encouraged her followers, especially first-time voters, to do their own research on the candidates and issues. She emphasized the importance of registering to vote and said she finds it easier to vote early herself. Swift promised to share voter registration and early voting information in her Instagram stories.

Now, why is this a hoo-ha?

Because it’s not Tan Ah Kow, but Taylor Swift.

Swift’s endorsement was eagerly anticipated given her status as arguably the biggest pop star in the world currently. Her fanbase, known as Swifties, were already engaged in the election – an online community called “Swifties for Kamala” formed after Biden withdrew and endorsed Harris, and has raised over $122,000 so far.

Studies have showed celebrity endorsements can increase voter registration and turnout, and while it’s unknown if Swift’s endorsement would swift the needle, one thing is for sure: her tours have substantial economic impact to the country she performed, aptly called Swiftonomics.
