This might shock you to your very core, but there are actually sexual offenders out there who aren’t students or teachers at NUS.
Even though these criminals don’t have a high GPA or “potential to excel in life”, they are sometimes given a second chance, an opportunity to learn from their mistakes.
Sadly, instead of grabbing this opportunity with both hands, they very violently fling it out the window, and continue to commit their misdeeds.
Teacher Who Was on Conditional Warning Took Upskirt Photos Again
When MOE teacher Daniel Chen Junyi was given a conditional warning for taking upskirt photos, he had a chance to abandon his sexual deviances and grow as a person.
But, he took more upskirt photos instead.
It all started in 2017, when Chen was at Jurong Point mall. There, he took an upskirt video of an unsuspecting female victim he didn’t know, according to TODAYonline.
Then, in Jan 2018, Chen had gone to his girlfriend’s block to meet her. In the lift on the way up, he encountered a 17-year-old girl and her sister, who were both wearing their school uniforms.
Even though his girlfriend lived on the fourth floor, Chen pressed the button for the highest floor, and stood behind the girls.
He then bent down and positioned his phone underneath the 17-year-old girl’s skirt to take a video.
When the girl’s sister noticed Chen’s suspicious movements, she turned around and he quickly pulled back his phone.
Chen then went to the highest floor and watched the video he took.
The two girls made a police report later that evening.
Given Conditional Warning
The police managed to trace Chen using police camera footage, and arrested him a week later.
Chen had deleted the video by then.
Instead of getting jail time, Chen was given a conditional warning, meaning he had to remain crime-free for two years.
Those with conditional warnings who commit more crimes during this period can be prosecuted for their original crime.
But no one would be dumb enough to re-offend during a time when they were specifically told not to do so, right?
Re-Offended With Girlfriend Nearby
On 25 Sep last year, Chen had accompanied his girlfriend who was shopping for clothes.
While she was shopping, Chen approached a 17-year-old employee, bent down, and filmed a video up her dress.
The victim became uncomfortable, as Chen was standing very close to her.
But this wasn’t enough for Chen.
He took an upskirt video of another victim after that, all while his girlfriend was nearby.
Five days later, Chen was arrested for his crimes and the two upskirt videos were retrieved from his mobile phone.
Jailed For Six Weeks
According to Chen’s lawyer, his client had initially gone for counselling and psychotherapy that were “effective in curbing his urges”.
But then he stopped the psychotherapy, and his urges became hard to control again.
He reportedly also glued a sticker over his phone’s camera to permanently block it, and even joined various help groups.
However, Chen had never been diagnosed with a psychiatric condition, and so was still in control of his actions.
On Wednesday (30 Sep), the 29-year-old was jailed for six weeks after pleading guilty last month to two counts of insulting a woman’s modesty.
It could have been a lot worse, though, as the offence carries a penalty of up to a year’s imprisonment.
