These days, whenever a few COVID-19 cases are detected at a single place, the entire area will be closed for a few days so that deep cleaning can occur.
And with the constant rise in the number of COVID-19 cases these days, the frequency of closures is getting higher as well.
First Floor of Tekka Centre Closed for Deep Cleaning 3 Days After Several COVID-19 Cases Were Detected There
The latest place to be closed is Tekka Market & Hawker Centre in Little India, or more specifically, the first floor of Tekka Market & Hawker Centre which houses the hawker centre and the wet market will be closed from today (8 October) to Sunday, 10 October, for deep cleaning.
Several COVID-19 infections were detected in this area.
Responding to why only the first floor was closed, MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC Mr Alvin Tan explained that hawker centres and wet markets are more susceptible to the spread of the infection because those who visit this floor usually have their masks down so that they can eat.
He went on to explain that since the second floor consisted of all retail units where it is unlikely for people to have their masks down, the second floor will continue operating as per usual during the next three days.
Mr Tan also shared on Facebook that the enforcement of safe management measures has been stepped up at Tekka Centre these past few months.
He said that since he visits Tekka Market & Hawker Centre often, he knows that many of the stall owners are vaccinated and are thus protected from severe outcomes if they do become infected.
Several People Have Been Breaching Safe Management Measures
He also added, “Over the last few weeks, our agencies have had to issue summonses to stall owners and patrons who wilfully breach COVID-19 safety measures.”
This statement was said to add to the announcement by National Environment Agency (NEA) which said that there were many groups that tend to linger around hawker centres and end up not following safe management measures. In fact, Tekka Centre was one of the hawker centres where this can be observed.
Mr Tan ended his Facebook post by urging everyone to play their part in this and to ensure that they adhere to safe management measures so that the spread of COVID-19 can be curbed.
