Love is a dangerous thing.
You can never truly trust a partner unless you’ve known them for an extended period of time.
Maybe not even then.
And when you choose to marry a person, you’re trusting them to be there for you for the rest of your life.
Or, at the very least, the wedding day.
But, as one Thai woman found out the hard way, that’s not always the case.
Thai “Billionaire” Groom Abandons Bride On Wedding Day, Leaves Her With $159,000 Debt
As the headline says, a Thai groom ran off on his wedding day, leaving his bride with massive debt.
According to the Bangkok Post, the 30-year-old woman, identified as Da, met the 50-year-old man, Nat, in March at her father’s funeral.
Mrs Noi, Da’s mother, said Da had introduced Nut as a “billionaire” CEO who had business dealings in Hong Kong. The family knew nothing else about the man.
Nut immediately proposed, and Da accepted.
At this point, I feel it’s necessary to advise people not to marry within a day of meeting a stranger. Wait two days. Everyone knows that it takes 48 hours to get to know someone.
The couple registered their marriage the next month and sent out invitations to a wedding party at a luxury hotel in Buri Ram province, according to the South China Morning Post.
The wedding day
Their wedding was a lavish affair, costing around 3.5 million baht (~S$159,000).
What the hell did they eat, Lombardo’s burgers?
On the wedding day, Noi said Nut placed a cashier’s cheque for 1.6 million baht (~S$72,525) as the dowry. However, after the wedding ceremony, the cheque disappeared.
Only 10 of the groom’s friends attended the wedding reception.
The groom soon left without paying any of the bills for the party, leaving the debt in Da’s hands.
Huge debt
The wedding venue, food, and beverages alone reportedly came up to a total of 400,000 baht (~S$18,120).
Moreover, the wedding organiser said she was hired for 300,000 baht (~S$13,598) and plans on suing the bride over the unpaid invoice.
The hotel, suprisingly, said the bride could settle the bill in instalments.
Unable to pay off debt
Noi, who has to take care of her bed-ridden grandmother, said her family doesn’t know how they are going to pay the massive debt.
The billionaire groom has remained uncontactable throughout. The bride has sought legal assistance and is reportedly filing for divorce.
If there’s anything to learn from this, it’s that you should really get to know someone before marrying them.
And if a man says he’s a billionaire and wants to marry you within hours of meeting you, alarm bells, not wedding bells, should be ringing in your head.
