Ah, it’s the typical Potong ice cream that everyone’s sure to remember from childhood, in all its colourful glory.
Yep, these babies are definitely familiar to every Singaporean:
Imagine those, but now GREEN, like the Hulk.
King’s, the brand that brought all of us much happiness when we were younger, has now released their latest stick of joy – Onde Onde flavoured Potong ice cream.
You can find these in supermarkets and hypermarkets all around the island going for a price of $1.20, similar to all the other Potong ice cream flavours and still affordable just like they were in the olden days.
And this makes it a perfect candidate for today’s #ThirstyThurday, because we know some of you quench your thirst with ice-cream.
Onde Onde…?
In case you’re a confused millennial who doesn’t really know traditional desserts all that well, onde onde (say own day own day, not to be confused with the spectacles shop) are small green glutinous rice balls with gula melaka filling covered in fresh grated coconut.
It’s a beloved Peranakan dessert that hailed from Java, and had somehow made its way to the Netherlands when Indonesian immigrants moved there and brought this intangible piece of culture along.
Look how cute!
But how would these tiny green balls taste like in creamy ice cream form, a different way than how it’s usually traditionally made?
King’s Potong Signature Onde Onde Ice Cream
I only ever remember eating Potong stick ice creams in primary school on those days where they suddenly decide to be nice and give free ice cream to every student.
It’s great and all, and you know how everything tastes better when it’s free, but I’m just someone who never preferred ice creams with local flavours over the flashy Cornetto or Paddle Pop, so I wouldn’t actively choose those when faced with a choice.
So when my boss told me that King’s had come out with a new Onde Onde flavoured potong ice cream, I wasn’t jumping out of my seat kinda thrilled, but was more like oh, cool.
Then I had the chance to try one, and wow, it kinda changed my perspective about ice cream.
The first impression I got of the bright green ice cream stick was that the pandan smell is really strong, which I could smell immediately after removing it from the packaging.
When I took my first bite, I honestly wondered why they never had this flavour before now, because if they did, I’d eat it gladly even without it being on free ice-cream day.
It’s sweet and fragrant, with just the right amount of the coconut taste that’ll please people who don’t fancy too strong of a coconut taste. If you like creamy stuff, then you’ll love this ice cream.
If you like surprises, this one also has a surprise centre of gula melaka filling, just like the original dessert. Prepare your teeth if you’re unable to bite ice cream due to sensitive teeth like me though, as the centre can get quite hard when the gula melaka hardens.
And the best part is that even the crunchy coconut flakes aren’t sacrificed when turning this solid food into ice cream form – there’s an abundance of it throughout the ice cream stick which was very refreshing and added kick to the entire thing.
Considering how hot Singapore is, I’d say this simple and sweet ice cream will satisfy you more than those with chocolate in it for it leaves only a light taste in your mouth and is easy on the palate.
Yes or No?
Yes lah.
This was definitely a win for someone like me who doesn’t really eat traditional desserts or locally flavoured ice cream, and it’s worth trying especially if you grew up loving these flavours.
If you’re old and wish there was some way you could time travel back to your youth, try one of these and it just might transport you back to your childhood days of eating Potong ice cream.
BRB, I’ll be on my way to the pantry to grab another stick.
