#ThirstyThursday: Pepsi Black Ginger & Vanilla Review: It’s Not As Bad As It Sounds

Okay, we (meaning the boss and the team, since he’s the one paying, as usual) were combing through the nearest 7-Eleven’s chiller for the Nescafe Cold Brew yesterday when we came across something crazy.

These.

Sleek sexy neck, bottom-heavy Pepsi Black (read: sugarless Pepsi) with Vanilla and Ginger flavours.

Yup. We bought them.

Pepsi Black Vanilla & Ginger Flavours

Okay, I’ll be honest. I’m not the first choice for writing this article. But every writer in the office flat out refuse to give these drinks a chance after seeing the flavours involved.

It’s safe to say that the idea of a sugarless Pepsi infused with Ginger is a thought that people were turned off by.

The Pepsi Black Vanilla and Pepsi Black Ginger are flavours that were recently introduced into the market by the giant drink manufacturer.

And seeing how our resident health-conscious writer had drunk, and raved, about Coke Zero’s flavoured variants, we got curious about how the Pepsi’s versions compare.

The Visual

True to their names, they’re a dark, murky black.

In fact, you’ll probably think they’re kopi-o if they were put into a nondescript cup like these.

But, unless you’re having a blocked nose, you won’t miss the fragrance of vanilla and ginger wafting from the drinks.

Yes, the smell’s really strong. So if someone were to serve you Pepsi Black Vanilla or Ginger in a cup (like a fast food cup), you won’t mistakenly drink a Pepsi that you’ve not ordered.

How Does It Taste Like?

Okay, let’s go one-by-one for this because the Ginger and Vanilla versions garnered different responses.

Pepsi Black Ginger

The Pepsi Black Ginger was a pleasant surprise. If you’re someone who likes the fragrance of ginger (the stronger the better), this is just the drink for you.

That sharp, spicy taste of ginger surprisingly blended well with the taste of Pepsi, and despite the fact that it’s sugar-free, the drink leaves your mouth with a sweet aftertaste.

But, if you’re not a fan of ginger, this might not be the drink for you.

Pepsi Black Vanilla

The zesty scent of vanilla is strong in this one.

Compared to Coke Vanilla, the Pepsi Black Vanilla has a stronger vanilla fragrance, which might’ve suppressed the natural taste of the Pepsi.

So much so that when you first drink, you’d think you’re drinking fizzy vanilla. The only time you’ll taste Pepsi is in the aftertaste.

So, no, count me out for this.

All in all, I’ll say that these drinks are worth a shot, especially if you’re feeling particularly adventurous.

The two drinks are available at 7-Eleven outlets at $2.30 per bottle.
