#ThirstyThursday: Samyang Coffee Review: So Good You Don’t Have To Go Cafes Again

A long, long time ago, (okay-not that long) in a small island country near the equator, people are not able to enjoy atas coffee unless they make their way to new-fangled cafes like Starbucks.

Caramel macchiato? Cafe Latte? These are drinks that are exclusively available in cafes. Cafes where a cup typically costs above five bucks.

But today? The country has progressed and besides the bicentennial celebrations, Singaporeans are celebrating another fact of life.

The fact that atas coffees are not just non-exclusive, but cheaper.

Cafe-Style Drinks in Normal Shops

If you’re an avid drinker of coffee (and by that, I don’t mean just kopi-o, but all coffee), you’d have realised a disturbing trend.

Companies are now packaging their coffees and selling them at non-cafe settings.

Yes, even drinks like cold brewed coffee aren’t spared.

Nescafe, Starbucks, you name it, you’d probably find their drinks being sold on shelves. That and loads of new brands that are popping up right now.

Samyang Coffee

Given that my boss’s a coffee addict who rewatches Descendants of The Sun every night for Song Hye Kyo instead of sleeping, he came across this Korean cafe-style coffee that’s just begging to be reviewed.

I mean, look at the packaging. Attention-grabbing is an understatement.

They come in cups the perfect size to hold in your hand and is sealed tight with an aluminium sheet and covered with a plastic cap. Classy.

And for those who are afraid dust or cockroaches will get into your drink, the entire drink is a self-contained saferoom. Even when you’re drinking it.

You poke your straw through a hole in the plastic cover like you’re drinking from a Yeo’s packet drink.

Ta-da!

But like my fat boss said, I didn’t pay you to give safety workshops…

…How Does It Taste?!

The drinks are thick and creamy, giving every sip that burst of flavour you absolutely love.

But be warned, if you’re not a person with a sweet tooth, these drinks might not be your cup of coffee.

Sweet with a hint of bitterness, the cafe mocha will give you the caffeine fix your body needs in the most pleasant way possible.

But if you’re not a fan of real coffee, the caramel macchiato might just be the one for you. Sweeter yet blending incredibly well with the fragrance of milk.

Prefer something that’s a bit more middle-ground? The cafe latte strikes a perfect balance between the two, with just the right amount of sweetness and bitterness.

So, What’s The Verdict?

It’s definitely worth a try, especially if you’re a lover of cafe-style coffees.

But, of course, if you’re someone who doesn’t have a sweet tooth, don’t even try them. They’re sweet.

Each cup is going for $2.50 at FairPrice outlets. Cheaper than cafes but with similar experience.

Of course, seat hogging not included. For that, you’ll still have to make your way to Starbucks.

Rating: 4/5 (If you’re into cafe-style coffees)
