You have cooked a romantic candlelight dinner at home and your partner is arriving soon. The food is cooked, the table set, the candles waiting to be lit, the wine glasses waiting to be filled. Wait, where’s the wine? You spot the wine bottle all ready and waiting for you to open it but then you remember you don’t actually have a wine opener.
There’s no time to pop out and buy a wine opener and you want to let the wine breathe before your guest is here. Don’t worry, we’ve got your back. Well, when we found this hack, we knew we have to share it with you!
Have you got a toolbox handy? You don’t even need a complete toolbox, just screws, a hammer and a screwdriver is all that is required. The bare essentials for a toolbox really. For this method to work, it is best to have larger screws with bigger threads, a matching screwdriver and a hammer with a good claw grip.
Step 1
Poke the screw into the cork, make sure its steady.
Step 2
Use the screwdriver and drive the screw deeper into the cork, until about an inch of the head is left.
Step 3
Take the hammer and get use the claw to pull out the screw and hammer at the same time
Voila! Your cork has popped and your bottle of wine is all ready for you to drink it. You don’t have a corkscrew but your makeshift wine opener works just as well.
As a safety precaution and for a better grip, wrap a towel around the bottle as you are pulling the screw out. If you don’t have screws at that moment, nails and pliers work fine too. Get the nail in at an angle at the cork then use the pliers to pull it out instead of the claw of the hammer.
Previously, a video of a gentlemen using his shoe to open a wine bottle did its rounds on the internet. The bottle was put into the shoe and then banged against the wall until the cork starts to pop out. This method might work but you need perseverance and some amount of strength before the cork finally pops.
When you are handling a glass bottle, make sure to handle it with care so that you do not injure yourself or others. Cheers to a great glass of wine!
