Coffeeshop in Tiong Bahru Caught Fire That Reportedly Involved the Exhaust Duct

For us, today (13 March 2021) is simply another casual Saturday. Or if you’re one of the unlucky few who has to work on this glorious day, well, maybe not so casual for you.

But for residents living near the Happy Hawkers Coffee Shop at Jalan Membina, it’s a whole different kind of Saturday.

One that could well mean the start of the haze season, and it’s more than understandable why they would think that way.

Coffeeshop in Tiong Bahru Caught Fire That Reportedly Involved the Exhaust Duct

Something occurred at the Happy Hawkers Coffee Shop at Block 18 Jalan Membina, and it was anything but a happy occasion.

Earlier today, Tanjong Pagar MP Indranee Rajah dropped a revelation on her social media page:

Apparently, a fire had broken out in the premises.

Thick grey smoke, not exactly unlike the infamous haze from our Indonesian neighbours, could be seen emerging from the heartland neighborhood shopping centre.

Online footage also revealed that the smoke was visible even from a distance.

Thankfully, nobody was hurt, though the coffeeshop can only resume operations when it is safe to do so.

Any necessary repairs, said Ms Indranee, will be settled by the town council.

Meanwhile, Netizens have praised Ms Indranee for her assistance and care during the event, with one even calling her the “best MP ever”.

An SCDF spokesperson has since stated that they were alerted to the fire at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday (13 March 2021).

The fire was extinguished with 2 water jets. It reportedly involved an exhaust duct at the coffee shop.

Investigations are currently ongoing.

Fire

Just yesterday (12 March 2021), another fire had broken out at Chinatown Point’s level 1.

Around 100 people had to be evacuated from the building.

According to the Perennial Singapore Retail Management spokesperson, the fire occurred at 10.15am – just before the store’s operating hours.

“Our property operations team, which was the first responders on-site, entered the tenant’s unit to try to extinguish the fire before SCDF arrived.”

The SCDF was subsequently alerted at around 10:25 a.m.

Preliminary investigations showed that the cause of the fire was “of electrical origin”.

Apparently, the blaze involved an in-store signboard. Thankfully, it was killed off by the sprinkler system – prior to the SCDF’s arrival – at around 10:45 a.m.

No casualties were reported, though a man had to be admitted to Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for smoke inhalation.
