TNP Will Become a Weekday-Only Newspaper Next Year. Here’s Why

I‘m fairly certain you guys have noticed a group of people giving out newspapers during your daily commute to work.

Every so often, a person or two will go up and take a copy of the freshly printed paper. I know I would.

There’s just something about flipping open the pages to a fresh set of newspaper.

Anyway, one such publication would be “The New Paper”(TNP).

Just two days ago, on 19 Dec, The New Paper has announced that they will be ceasing their Saturday edition and turning into a five-day publication from next year onward.

With a daily circulation of 300,000 copies, TNP is by no means a small operation.

They mainly target professionals and executives on local affairs, economy and all sorts of adult stuff us glue eaters could never hope to understand.

*Ahem*

So why the sudden change to a weekday publication only?

It’s largely because of their readers.

Here’s what TNP has to say about the change:

“A large percentage of our readers are PMETs who work five-day work weeks. Furthermore, Saturday travel patterns of readers are getting more varied as people go about their weekend activities.” Said TNP’s editor, Eugene Wee.

“Hence, we have decided to focus our resources on weekdays to give our readers the best of news, sports and lifestyle stories.”

TL;DR: Most people don’t work on Saturday, so TNP no longer publishes on Saturday.

Personally, I thought that it was a good idea too. People hardly take the newspapers when they’re travelling around on a weekend.

After all, you wouldn’t want to carry a roll of newspaper in your bag when you’re shopping, right?

Anyway, looks like it’s time for another edition of:

(Because I can’t hit the word count for this article)

TNP used to be an afternoon tabloid until 2006, where it became a morning daily. Then in 2016, TNP merged with the bilingual freesheet My Paper. The merger also marked the end of the Sunday edition of TNP.

(Ahh, so that’s where My Paper went)

Well, that about does it for news regarding TNP. I really hope print copies will continue to exist.

There’s just something different about reading an article on your phone, ya know?

Since you’re here, why not watch a video about a guy who lodged a Police report here in Singapore because he was friendzoned? Seriously. Here, watch it and do remember to share it (and also subscribe to Goody Feed YouTube channel)!
