Today is the only day of the year where this article is relevant.
Oops, wrong atmosphere, let me start again.
Today, we’re going to talk about food!
Our Chinese friends might know this (might ‘cos apparently some of my colleagues didn’t), it is a Chinese tradition to eat glutinous rice balls (tang yuan) during the Winter Solstice.
What is the Winter Solstice
Winter Solstice, or 冬至, is the day where the northern hemisphere has the shortest day and the longest night.
The following days will see longer days and shorter nights, which basically makes the Winter Solstice a turning point.
Everyone is believed to turn a year older, according to the elderly. Hence, today is also named as “亚岁” (Asian birthday).
Why we eat tang yuan
“圆” (yuan) stands for “团圆” (tuan yuan) “圆满” (yuan man), which means the whole family is together and all is well.
A lot of wordplays, I know.
The act of eating tang yuan during the winter solstice is also called “冬至团” (winter solstice tuan).
The delicacy is used to offer as gifts to relatives as well as paying respects to ancestors.
Where to get tang yuan
The frozen ones are typically found in all supermarkets while the readily-cooked ones are sold at dessert shops.
