Two-Year-Old Accidentally Kills Mother with Gun in Brazil, Father Faces Manslaughter Charges

A 27-year-old woman died after being shot by her two-year-old son during a family holiday in Brazil.

The tragic incident occurred on 13 Jun 2025 in Rio Verde de Mato Grosso, a small town in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

The victim has been identified as Deborah Rodrigues Monteiro. She was with her husband and son on a short holiday near their home when the fatal shooting took place.

CCTV Footage Captures Fatal Moments

Video footage from the couple’s own CCTV system captured the entire incident. The footage shows the young boy spotting a Glock 9mm handgun on a table on the veranda.

The toddler picks up the weapon and begins playing with it. His parents were conversing nearby and remained unaware of the danger.

Moments later, as Monteiro turns to look at her son, he pulls the trigger. The bullet strikes her in the chest and arm.

Initially, she appears to survive the shot. She stands up in shock and inspects her wounds. The toddler, clearly startled by what happened, drops the weapon and runs toward her. The woman’s husband rushes to help.

Father Faces Manslaughter Charges Over Gun Negligence

Police have confirmed that the gun belonged to Monteiro’s husband, a farmer who held a legal licence for the weapon. He has been arrested on suspicion of negligence and will face manslaughter charges.

However, he will remain free during the course of the investigation.
