We have said this before and we’ll say it again: According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), there is an increasing trend in outrage of modesty cases in Singapore.
Minister of Law, Mr K Shanmugam, was also quoted as stating that there has been a 24% increase in the number of reported cases of outrage of modesty from 2016 to 2020, in comparison to the 4 years before.
So, it isn’t really surprising to hear about the traumatic incident involving a 69 year-old Grab driver, Hashim Othman, and a 38-year-old female passenger in detail during his court hearing where he pleaded guilty to outraging the victim’s modesty.
An Unwelcomed, Free Calf “Massage”
In September 2018, at around 10pm, the victim ordered a Grab car on her phone to travel from East Coast Park to Block 896A, Tampines Street 81.
Hashim, who was working as a Grab driver then, took the job.
He picked the victim up at the designated spot. She sat in the rear seat on the left as he drove the car.
While they were on the Pan Island Expressway (PIE), the Grab driver reached out his hand towards the rear passenger seat and brushed the victim’s right ankle.
This could be just an accidental contact, but what he subsequently did definitely isn’t.
According to the prosecutor, Hashim then turned around and stared at the victim’s legs.
Yes, while on the expressway.
He proceeded to place his left hand in between the victim’s ankles and stroke her inner calf, moving from her ankle to her knee, several times.
The victim was rightfully startled and demanded to know what he was doing.
Apologizing, Hashim withdrew his hand, but the damage has already been done.
The victim lodged a police report the next day.
Jail Sentence Due to Precedence
The prosecutor referred to the judgment of another similar molestation case, where the offence was committed inside a private-hire vehicle and that skin-on-skin contact was involved, and pushed for a short jail sentence.
Hashim was sentenced to one week in jail for his offence. His family was with him when the sentence was meted out.
Suffice to say, one should always keep their eyes on the road while on the expressway…and don’t touch others without permission while driving.
