Tow Truck Hit Gravel Truck On the PIE; Airbag Had Saved Driver’s Life

The first half of July promises to bring more rainy days to our usually sunny island during this year’s ongoing monsoon season.

Although rainy days may mean cooler weather and cold comfort to some, being caught out on the roads on one isn’t all that much of a pleasant thing.

However, that means it could even cause more road accidents.

Accident Involving Two Trucks On PIE

On 10 July, Saturday, two trucks were involved in a collision on the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) with one truck slamming front-first into the rear of the other.

The accident occurred at about 12 noon on the PIE towards Tuas, near a fork in the road leading to the Ayer Rajah Expressway exit, while it was raining.

According to Ms Li, who was driving on the expressway shortly after the accident happened, there was a tow truck that had collided into the back of a dump truck.

As the dump truck was carrying a heavy mound of sand and gravel, the impact of the crash led the scene to be extremely messy.

She recounted that the driver of the tow truck got stuck in the driver’s seat as the front of the truck was dented due to the large impact.

Driver’s Life Saved By Airbag

Fortunately, the impact allowed the airbag in the truck to be activated, which saved the life of the driver.

Still, the driver couldn’t move out of the seat as they were trapped by the airbag.

Other drivers came to assist, with one attempting to climb into the front seat via the window to check on the driver while two others stood outside for support.

It was evident that the impact of the crash was extremely large, for tow trucks are usually very sturdy, yet the entire front part of the truck was uplifted and dented, Ms Li said.

She added that she hoped the driver would be safe.

Upon receiving a report, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) rushed down to the scene, where they saw one person trapped in the driver’s seat of the tow truck.

Hydraulic rescue equipment was used to rescue the 36-year-old driver, who was later taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital in a conscious state.

The police were also alerted about the incident at about 12:15pm, and are currently investigating the case.

Stay safe on the roads especially when it’s raining, folks.
