The life of a smartphone user can roughly be divided into two periods: BCE (Before Circles.Life Entered) and CE (Circles.Life Era).

Life in the years BCE were tough; we had to constantly monitor our data usage, and use Wireless@SG whenever we left our homes.

Worse, you’d have to pay over $40 for a measly 2GB or so a month.

Considering what’s available now, it was a dark, dark time.

But then Circles.Life entered the telecom arena, and everything changed.

They disrupted the market by offering data-heavy plans at affordable prices, forcing the competition to do the same.

Soon, the other telecoms started offering plans of around $1 per GB.

Now, the competition might just have to lower their prices even further.

TPG Has a New 80GB Plan for Just $18 a Month with Roaming Data

TPG Telecom launched a data-heavy SIM-only plan that is sure to turn heads.

On Thursday (14 Jan), the country’s fourth telco launched an $18 for 80GB plan, which is the most value-for-money plan of its kind at the moment.

The plan also includes 500 minutes of local outgoing calls and 300 minutes of international direct dialling (IDD) to 21 countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and China.

Not just that, users who opt for this plan will also get free 2GB roaming data to selected countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand.

Is this the real life?

But the advantages of this plan don’t end there.

See, unknown to many users, “unlimited” data plans actually throttle surfing speeds once users exceed a daily or monthly threshold.

So, they’re the cheapest on paper, but not the fastest if you actually use a lot of data.

On the other hand, TPG’s new plan is offered at 4G speeds, meaning your surfing speeds won’t be throttled even if you use all 80GB offered per month.

Launched Commercial Services Last Year

Unbeknownst to some, TPG Telecom is actually an Australian telecommunications and IT company.

They specialise in consumer and business internet services as well as mobile telephone services, and happen to be the second largest internet service provider in Australia.

In 2016, the company secured the licence to become Singapore’s fourth telco.

The telco hit the headlines in 2019 when it offered its users free unlimited roaming data in Malaysia and Indonesia in 2019 as part of a free trial service.

Then, in April 2020, it finally started offering commercial services.

Unfortunately for TPG users, the telco missed out on the rights to build Singapore’s two nationwide 5G networks.

They’re still, however, permitted to operate smaller 5G networks that provide spot coverage using airwaves.
