As you’ve seen in countless videos online, cyclists and other motorists on the road have a rather complicated relationship.
Cyclists sometimes lament the fact that they’re not given the right of way on the roads, while motorists hate when cyclists pedal in the middle of the lane, slowing traffic.
Unbeknownst to some, however, cyclists are actually permitted to ride their bicycles on the road, except for expressways and road tunnels.
But of course, if you’re going to ride on the roads, you have to follow the rules of the road.
And if you don’t, be prepared to be greeted by an officer in white and blue.
2 Cyclists Caught Running Red Light
A video of two cyclists beating a red light and subsequently being stopped by an LTA officer has made the rounds on social media.
The footage was shared on the Facebook page SG Road Vigilante on Monday (15 March).
According to SG Road Vigilante, the incident took place at a junction along Tanah Merah Coast Road on 13 March, 2021.
At the start of the video, three cyclists can be seen approaching a junction. The footage appears to have been recorded by one of the cyclists behind the group.
Even though the traffic light turns red, two of the cyclists continue pedaling and ride ahead.
One of the cyclists who remained at the junction can be heard saying “They have a death wish”, after the pair beat the red light.
What sounds like a motorcycle then approaches, and a man, presumably a traffic police officer says: “Do they belong to your group of friends?”
Both cyclists said no, with one adding: “We were trying to stop them but they just went off.”
LTA Officer Chases Pair
Once the light turns green, the LTA officer kicks his bike into gear and chases the offending duo.
It doesn’t take long for the officer to catch up to them, as we catch a glimpse of him giving them a dressing down as the cyclist recording the incident glides past them.
It’s unknown if the officer fined the pair or simply gave them a slap on the wrist, but given how serious the offence was, it was likely the former.
For those who don’t know, Tanah Merah has become a popular cycling spot in recent years thanks to the 10-km dedicated cycling lane on the left-most lane of Tanah Merah Coast Road.
If you want to cycle on the roads, however, remember to stay on dedicated lanes or keep to the left of the road for your own safety.
And, of course, running a red light is never a good idea, unless, as that cyclist said, you have a “death wish”.
