Man Impersonated His Brother After Being Stopped by the Police But It Turned Out His Brother is a Wanted Man

Imagine this: you’re caught breaking the law, and because it’s not your first time, you know you’re going to face severe punishment.

After seconds of profuse sweating and deliberation, you come up with a brilliant plan: pose as someone else.

This way, the police have no idea that you had committed a crime in the past, because you’re not that person anymore, right?

Sure, that’ll work, unless the person you’re impersonating is wanted by the police as well.

A Long List of Offences

Jason Chia Junjie’s first brush with the law came in 2008, when was fined $7,000 and banned from driving for five years after he caused the death of a motorcyclist on an expressway.

Despite not getting a driving licence after the ban, Chia drove his brother’s car in Oct 2014. When he was travelling across a junction in Geylang, he failed to keep a proper lookout and hit a man who was crossing the road.

He fled the scene, and sadly, the victim ended up succumbing to their injuries.

It was only two years later that Chia surrendered to the police and admitted to the offence. He was sentenced to 10 months’ jail and banned from driving until 22 Sep 2026.

But, as you probably guessed, Chia took to the roads once again.

On 2 Nov last year, Chia was driving a car despite his disqualification along Lorong 12 Geylang when a policeman stopped him for a check.

At this point, Chia had two options:

  1. Come clean and face the consequences
  2. Come clean and face the consequences

Instead, he took secret option 3: pose as his brother.

Chia claimed that he had forgotten his NRIC and furnished his brother’s particulars instead.

But in a twist that even M Night Shyamalan didn’t see coming, the officer discovered that Chia’s brother was wanted as well, and arrested Chia.

It was only in a subsequent interview that Chia admitted to lying about his identity.

But you just know that there’ll be another article in four years about this same dude driving unlawfully.

Earlier, Chia pleaded guilty to one count each of:

  • driving without insurance
  • driving while under a disqualification order
  • giving false information to a public servant

As for what his brother is wanted for, details have not been revealed to the public.
