Truck Driver Sped Off After Hitting Cyclist in Bedok & Allegedly Even Ran Over Body

There’s an age-old saying that goes like this: do something, don’t get caught.

However, if you’re involved in an accident, don’t even think about trying to run off.

Truck Driver Caught For Hit-and-Run

The following incident occurred along the junction of New Upper Changi Road and Bedok North Road.

According to Lianhe Zaobao, a 67-year-old male truck driver had hit a 48-year-old cyclist with his vehicle yesterday (26 October 2020) at 11.42am.

Unfortunately, the victim passed away after the accident at Changi General Hospital.

The driver was quickly arrested on the same day, but what exactly happened?

Truck Was Moving At High Speed

A 40-year-old witness saw the victim riding a bicycle on the opposite side to go to another construction site.

When he reached the zebra crossing, the truck came and rammed into him.

The cyclist was apparently knocked six metres away and the witness attempted to go over to help.

And that’s not even the end of it.

The truck driver then decided to accelerate away, which allegedly caused the vehicle to run over the victim’s body.

The witness tried to get him to come back, but the truck was already leaving the scene.

He then took pictures of the vehicle and called the police.

The deceased’s 32-year-old boss was notified of the incident and rushed down immediately.

By then, the former was in a pool of blood and motionless.

A stomper also saw the body around 12.05pm while on a bus. He saw paramedics assisting the cyclist, who was eventually brought to Changi General Hospital.

He passed away from his injuries.

Penalty If Convicted

At the very least, the truck was arrested shortly after for his involvement. The case is currently under investigation.

You can’t speed away from the law, sir.

If convicted, the truck driver can face a fine up to S$3,000, a jail term of up to 12 months or both.

And if they somehow find out he was drink-driving, the penalty gets worse.

There could be an additional fine of S$2,000 to S$10,000, an additional one year in jail or both.

Other Traffic Incidents

While there haven’t been other hit-and-run cases, October has seen a fair share of traffic incidents.

On 23 October, a red Audi had collided with the back of a van along Woodlands Avenue 12.

Among the victims was an 8-year-old girl, who was knocked out of the van during the collision.

She is currently still unconscious.

Another incident on 15 October saw a car crash into a road sign along Tampines Avenue 8.
