In order to get into the zone to read this article, one first has to listen to this song and watch this music video.

No prizes for guessing what this article is about. But I hope that it sparked your imagination a little and acted as a visual aid for this article.

I suppose that growing up with Hot Wheels and F1 and race car movies, some boys may aspire to dabble a little in racing.

What happened

On 13 October 2018, Allan Chia Chee Shin, 39 and Ng Chee Yong, 27, decided that it would be fun to race each other down the Yio Chu Kang and Braddell Road CTE stretch towards Ayer Rajah Expressway.

They were both headed to East Coast Road.

Seeing that it was about 12.50 a.m., they thought that there would not be many people on the road and they would be able to get away with it.

They chased each other down the road at about 180km/hr which is twice the speed limit allowed.

During this race, they overtook about 10 vehicles and put the lives of these people in danger.

Traffic Police

Unbeknownst to them, Traffic Police officer, Staff Sergeant David Yap was on duty that night. He captured the speed at which their car was going with a laser gun.

SSGT Yap halted the race by catching Chia’s car as he was approaching the CTE exit and Chia admitted to his offence. He was driving at 178km/hr.

The other driver, Ng, thought that he got away with it. He even went to the McDonald’s at East Coast Park for supper.

However, Traffic Police officers found Ng’s car at East Coast Park three hours later at 3:00 a.m. He was then arrested at home.

Punishment

For their rash and irresponsible act, both drivers have been sentenced to two weeks in jail. In addition, they are no longer permitted to drive all classes of vehicles for four years.

While this may seem harsh, the maximum amount of penalty they could have received would be a fine of $5,000 and to be jailed for a year.

The Traffic Police have commented that they have sentenced them harshly to recognise the severity of how they have endangered the lives of others. Furthermore, it can act as a ‘deterrent’ to other motorists.

Road safety

Ng and Chia said that they were just ‘playing’ with one another. Thankfully, no one was hurt during this race. However, it is all fun and games until someone dies or becomes a vegetable for life.

Please drive safely. You can go racing in the arcade or in a go-kart circuit.

Is This Common?

According to my colleague who’s a driver, it’s common to see a speeding car anyhowly overtaking his lao kok kok car, followed by another speeding car.

He doesn’t drive at 12:40 a.m. regularly, but has seen at least three of these “races”.

In other words, yes, it is common. Hopefully this news would send a message to these racers-wannabe.
