About 30 people were evacuated after a fire broke out at a two-storey landed home along Simon Lane in Kovan on Saturday afternoon, 5 September.
One person from a neighbouring home was taken to Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for smoke inhalation.
A firefighter also sprained his right ankle while tackling the blaze, although he did not need to be taken to hospital. A neighbouring house was partially damaged by the fire.
Firefighters Used Three Water Jets to Put Out Fire
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at about 3pm.
By the time firefighters arrived, the two-storey house was on fire.
Firefighters used three water jets to bring the blaze under control and extinguish it. One resident from the affected house had already left the property before SCDF arrived.
As a precaution, police officers and firefighters evacuated about 30 people from neighbouring homes.
SCDF said the fire also caused partial damage to the house next door.
AsiaOne, which arrived at the scene shortly after 5pm, reported that thick smoke was still coming from the property. It also observed that part of the affected house’s tiled roof appeared to have collapsed.
Fire engines, police vehicles, an ambulance and other emergency vehicles were at the scene, while firefighters were also seen working from an elevated platform.
Neighbour Taken to SGH for Smoke Inhalation
One person from a neighbouring unit was assessed by SCDF for smoke inhalation before being taken to SGH.
During the firefighting operation, one firefighter suffered a sprain to his right ankle. SCDF said he did not require conveyance to hospital.
SCDF subsequently carried out damping-down work at the affected property. This involves applying water to burnt surfaces after the main fire has been extinguished to reduce the chance of hidden hot spots causing the fire to start again.
The Straits Times reported that smoke was still visible when its journalists reached the area at about 4.30pm.
As of The Straits Times’ report updated at 12.09am on Sunday, 6 September, the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
