Even if you haven’t been keeping up with the news, you probably know that there’s a war happening in Ukraine right now.
And here’s a new update about the war: According to Ukraine, Russia has begun launching attacks on “civilian targets” in Ukraine.
These places include hospitals, nurseries and schools.
According to BBC TV’s Sunday Morning programme, Ukrainian deputy prime minister Olha Stefanishyna reported that Russia launched an “enormous operation” against civilians after the Ukrainian army put up “strong resistance”.
Yesterday (6 March), United Nations (UN) monitors recorded 364 confirmed civilian deaths in Ukraine from the start of the invasion on 24 February. However, the actual figure is apparently “considerably higher”.
Apart from that, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that over 1.5 million people have fled Ukraine since the invasion by the Russians.
The Situation in Ukraine
Currently, various parts of Ukraine have been attacked mercilessly by the Russians.
Just yesterday in Irpin, Russians were seen firing shells at Ukrainians who were trying to escape. The shells killed an entire family of four.
A scheduled evacuation for the port city of Mariupol had to be cancelled as well. The city council claimed that they have called off the evacuation for the second day in a row due to the Russian shelling.
Currently, Mariupol has gone five days without any running water, power and sanitation. The food and water supplies in the city are also being depleted.
“Shelled hospitals, the shelled houses for kindergartens and schools, and the ordinary households,” Ms Stefanishyna explained.
“This is how the reality looks.”
Additionally, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has also reported attacks on health facilities in Ukraine.
WHO’s director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed this, mentioning that Russia’s attacks have caused “multiple deaths and injuries”.
Russia’s Actions
Despite the havoc that has been wrecked on Ukraine, Russia has continued to deny the fact that they have been targeting civilians.
Instead, they claim that they are implementing a “special military operation” against Ukrainian “nationalists” and “neo-Nazis”.
Additionally, with regards to the Russian shelling, Russia has put the blame on the Ukrainian forces.
However, some other countries may beg to differ.
For example, according to an intelligence update, Britain’s government has observed that Russia has been attacking areas with a large population “in multiple locations”.
The British government also brought up the fact that Russia has “previously used similar tactics in Chechnya in 1999 and Syria in 2016”.

Ms Stefanishyna said that Russia was organising a “terroristic plan”, and mentioned the “military tactics right in the cities of Ukraine” by Russia. According to her, Russia has been attacking Ukraine through both air and land.
She talked about how Ukraine has been the victim of “another wave of implementation of this terroristic plan of [the] Russian Federation”.
She also added that Russia has been affected by “enormous losses” of soldiers and military equipment, but it “does not deter Russia”.
“It only encourages further aggression,” she concluded.
