You know what? My mom was right. In this world today, you can’t make it without English.
But what she didn’t tell me was how important it is to differentiate between extinguish and distinguish.
Like some poor soul who’s probably getting smacked around by UOB right now. Figuratively, of course.
UOB’s Typos in Its High-SES Card
On 20 June, Facebook user Mick Price uploaded a photo onto Facebook.
It showed UOB bank’s launch of a diamond-studded credit card, the UOB Reserve Card, on 20 June, for customers who charge more than SS$1 million annually (Holy – what were they buying?!).
They presented the card to their customer in the form of a plaque.
Unfortunately for them, they made a couple of typos in the display. Can you spot them?
The post by Mick Price went viral almost overnight, with over 4.1k shares within the span of a night.
And when you think of Facebook’s stricter algorithm, that’s an achievement by itself.
The Typos Exactly
So, did you manage to figure out the typos? There are two, according to my O-Level English.
Here’s their original content: For those who value exclusivity in it’s most extinguished form.
UOB has clarified that they had meant to use the word, distinguished, instead of extinguished.
Which makes sense.
Second, one that hasn’t really been clarified, is the word “it’s”. Typically, it’s is used as a contraction (short form) of it is.
For this case, it’s meant to be a possessive pronoun, which means they should’ve used the word its without that apostrophe.
Now, if you’d ask my English Major colleagues, they’ll argue that using “it’s” instead of “its” isn’t technically a typo (careless mistake): it’s something that has confessed many people.
But hey, we ain’t Grammar Nazis so let’s move on.
Meanwhile, netizens are having a good time
You know how it is, right? When a big or well-known company or public figure makes a mistake, like the influencer saga that recently happened
So when UOB made this English boo-boo, you can bet your ass that people are going to start poking fun at the matter.
Aish, they should stop it lor. Nobody makes mistakes meh???
I know, I should say that but you got to admit that every saga will have MVP comments that’s just begging to be shared.
Like this one.
R.I.P, wallets.
Or this.
Which makes sense. Because think about it. Charging $1 million to your credit card is like a literal suicide for most of us mortals, isn’t it?
Someone’s dreams were shattered.
And some were sympathetic towards the person who made the mistake.
And to show that the world isn’t all dark and merciless, there’ll always be someone who always looks on the bright side of things.
I guess that guy should be given a promotion, huh? You never know what marketers are thinking.
Anyway, for those who received this plaque with typo, you should probably keep it. Because you’re likely the last one to receive something like this from UOB.
UOB has apologised for the incident. They explained that they had overlooked the issue during their clearance process.
And they promised that this type of gaffe will not happen again in the future.
Its okay – I mean, it’s okay.
