Getting away with breaking the law in Singapore is like watching one episode of Into The Night and going to sleep immediately after: it’s not humanly possible.

So, when the Singapore gahmen tells you to do something, it’s in your best interest to do it.

And now with the Covid-19 virus partying all over our country, officials are taking a zero-tolerance approach when it comes to those who break the precautionary rules in place.

Even if you go out to buy a thermometer for your sick wife.

US Pilot Jailed 4 Weeks for Breaching SHN; He Had Gone Out to Buy Masks for His Sick Wife

When Brian Dugan Yeargan landed in Singapore on 3 April, he submitted an online health declaration form stating that he had visited China, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan and the United States in the last two weeks.

As a result, the Yeargan, a commercial cargo pilot with FedEx, was issued a 14-day stay-home notice and told that he could not leave his place at all times, even to buy food or essentials.

The 44-year-old was then escorted to Crowne Plaza Changi Airport with two other co-pilots and was reminded again not to leave their hotel rooms at any time.

But just two days later, when officers checked on Yeargan at about 11.30am, they discovered he was not in his room.

He had taken a train to Chinatown to buy a thermometer and a few boxes of face masks, after his wife asked him to get some personal protective equipment.

Now, according to Yeargan, there were around 1,000 people at City Hall station and 10 to 20 people at each shop he visited, which means he could have infected a high number of people.

But his wife was sick and needed some medical equipment, you say.

Except she wasn’t even in the same country.

Concerned About Wife’s Well-being

Love can often make you do stupid things, and this was one such case.

According to Yeargan’s defence lawyer, the pilot’s wife suffered from lowered immunity and had a health scare just before Yeargan left her on 18 Mar.

Emergency services were called to her home and she had serious breathing difficulties, reported CNA.

When Yeargan arrived in Singapore, he heard that Americans in the US would have to procure their own masks and personal protective equipment, and that masks would be prioritised for frontline workers.

He found this news “depressing”.

This guy is causing fear all over the world:

Afraid that they wouldn’t be able to get their hands on any mask in the US, Yeargan’s wife asked him to get some before he returned home.

However, as the judge pointed out, he could have asked someone else to do it.

Send A Clear Message

The prosecutor urged the court to “send a clear message to the public” that breaches of stay orders or stay-home notices will not be tolerated.

She even compared Yeargan to the infamous Bak Kut Teh lover who was jailed for six weeks for leaving his house to have Bak Kut Teh while on a stay-home notice.

The pilot was jailed for four weeks on Wednesday (13 May) for breaching his stay-home notice.

You have to feel for Yeargan though; his young daughter died four years ago. With that in mind, you can see why he was so desperate to help his ill wife anyway he could.

The pilot apologised for his actions and said he admires “the way Singapore runs the country and the protection they have over the citizens.

“I’d like to humbly offer my apologies and say I have the highest regard for the Singapore people and its laws.”

Take note, Bak Kut Teh lover and safe distancing rule-breakers all over the country. This is how you respond when you get caught for breaking the law.
