Netizens Are Having Fun After US Host Butchered the Pronunciation of Din Tai Fung

We get it. Mandarin is hard, and even Chinese Singaporeans are barely passing their Mother Tongue exams. So we should be more forgiving and understanding when someone foreign pronounces hanyu pinyin words wrong right?

WRONG. Especially if it was a deliberate mistake.

And one person is now facing the wrath of the internet hanyu pinyin police.

Ding Fung Chung

Din Tai Fung is literally so easy to pronounce; the only time you’ll fail is probably trying to say it in the right tone.

Or maybe if you’re trying to be funny. But I wouldn’t recommend that. Try asking Joelle Uzyel how that has worked out for her.

An Israeli-born US interior designer, Joelle, who is also the host of the US reality renovation program Murder House Flip, uploaded a TikTok video where she pronounced the popular Taiwanese chain as “Din Fung Chung”.

It was so off the mark even the man in the video had to correct her with the right English pronunciation.

Now she definitely knows she can’t have a career as a comedian because that joke flopped so hard the video had to get taken down of all the backlash.

One Singaporean decided to flip the joke back, but with American fast-food franchises:

Lesson learned: don’t mess with the people who take food seriously.

Especially Singaporeans, because we all take our food seriously.
