Since COVID-19 first emerged, the Singapore gahmen has updated its travel advisory numerous times.
Don’t go there, cases are high. Okay now you can go there, but definitely don’t go here. Wait, now here and there are fine, but everywhere else should be avoided.
This is understandable, of course. COVID-19 outbreaks are unpredictable and volatile. We’ve never seen anything like it in this generation.
All this time, it was Singapore who warned its residents against travelling to certain countries, but now that we’re the ones facing a huge spike in cases, other countries may not want their citizens coming here.
US Raises Travel Alert to S’pore & Discourages Unvaccinated Tavellers to Travel to S’pore
The US authorities have advised residents to avoid travelling to Singapore if they are not vaccinated against the coronavirus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – the national public health agency of the United States – raised its travel advisory for Singapore by one level recently to Level 3.
Level 3 countries are deemed to have a “high level of COVID-19” and are thus dangerous for some travellers to visit.
The advisory urged those in the US to be fully vaccinated before travelling to Singapore, adding that unvaccinated travellers should avoid non-essential travel to the city-state.
“Because of the current situation in Singapore, all travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants,” the advisory read.
It also reminded those intending to travel to Singapore to follow the prevailing recommendations or requirements, including wearing a mask and staying 6 feet apart from others.
Curiously, the CDC also raised its travel advisory for Hong Kong to Level 2, meaning it’s assessed to have a “moderate level” of COVID-19.
However, Hong Kong has reported fewer than 10 new cases a day since last month, with no locally transmitted infection since mid-August.
The highest daily tally in the last five months came on 27 Aug when 17 infections were reported.
1,647 New Cases Reported Yesterday (27 Sep)
Yesterday, 1,647 more infections were reported in Singapore, including 1,280 community cases.
The day before, nearly 2,000 new cases were recorded.
25 COVID-19 fatalities have also been reported in September alone, a monthly record.
The surge in cases forced the authorities to reimpose some COVID-19 restrictions, to prevent the country’s healthcare system from being overwhelmed.
Until 24 Oct, social gatherings, household visitors, and dining-in groups are limited to two participants.
1,288 COVID-19 cases are warded in hospitals at the moment, including 194 severe cases who require oxygen supplementation and 27 in the intensive care unit.
