2021 might be a year we’d want to forget, but it’s certainly thrown up a boatload of real-life dramas.
The NOC Saga and Tell the Truth, Khan or Khannot are just some of the melodramas that gripped the nation’s attention this year.
And just as the year was about to end, a new saga with an entirely new cast and plot was released, with several episodes airing at once.
When Taiwanese-American singer-songwriter Wang Leehom announced last week that he was filing for divorce, few had anticipated that massive faeces-storm that would hit the internet.
His ex-wife, Lee Jinglei, later accused Wang of multiple infidelities, including encounters with prostitutes, as well as bullying her during their marriage, and not giving her a fair share of assets after the divorce.
Now, two days after the allegations, Wang has finally broken his silence.
Felt Forced to Reply to Allegations
In a four-page post on social media pages, Wang said that he had faced a dilemma when the allegations emerged – address them and risk hurting the reputation of the mother of his three children, or let everyone believe her claims.
Not wanting people to believe these “untruths”, Wang felt he had a duty to respond.
He Denied Having an Affair During Their Marriage
The most notable allegation that Lee had levelled at her ex-husband, of course, was that he had been a philanderer during their marriage.
But Wang categorically denied all allegations of affairs, saying: “I can say with absolute certainty that I was never unfaithful in our marriage.”
He Denied Courting Her When She Was 16 & a Minor
In her Weibo post last week, Lee had also accused Wang of courting her when she was 16 and thus a minor.
This, too, was not true, Wang said.
“I first got to know Michiko Nishimura (the name he knew her by at the time) in 2003 after one of my concerts. But we lost contact for about 10 years after this,” he wrote.
To support this, Wang shared two blurry screenshots of emails supposedly exchanged between the pair when they first started talking, when Lee was 26.
“Hello stranger! Long time (no see)!” Lee allegedly wrote in the email.
He Claims He was Forced to Marry Her
Wang made it clear that even their marriage itself was something Lee had forced on him, specifically when she became pregnant after they began dating. She allegedly threatened to “disappear” with her baby if he didn’t marry her.
“I was very happy because I’ve always wanted to have children. But we had not yet arrived at the stage of discussing marriage,” he wrote.
He eventually agreed and they registered their marriage in New York City, but Wang called it the most harrowing day of his life.

They were Married For 5 Years, During which Wang Said He Lived in Fear
In his post, Wang said he and his wife were married from 27 Nov 2013 to 5 Aug 2019, when they separated, meaning they were husband and wife for exactly five years and eight months.
“I lived under fear, extortion and threats for these five years and eight months,” he said.
He Said He’s Given Her around S$32 Million From the Divorce
As for the allegations that he’s not given her a fair share of assets after the divorce, Wang said Lee had agreed to receive around 150 million yuan (S$32.2 million).
He even shared legal documents that supposedly proved Lee owned half of their Bel Air property in California (US$12 million, which is around S$16.4 million) and half of their investment account (US$15.7 million, which is around S$21.4 million).
In addition, Wang has agreed to provide her with a nanny, chauffeur, car and maid, all of which Lee allegedly requested.
He also agreed to give Lee 210,000 yuan (S$45,000) every month as an allowance.
He Claims He is Not Able to See his Children
In his post, Wang begged Lee to let him see his children, implying that he has no access to them at the moment, whether through legal restraint or otherwise.
He also pleaded with Lee to stop airing their personal affairs online, for the sake of their three children—two daughters and a son aged three to seven.
He Apologised to His Parents
Towards the end of his post, Wang apologised to his parents, saying he has “burdened” them with the mistakes he made in his marriage.
“I am deeply apologetic,” he said.
A day before, his father had penned a lengthy post in response to Lee’s allegations, saying his son’s life was hell during his marriage.
His Wife Responded Soon After, Saying “Nice Try”
Not too long after Wang put up his post, Lee responded with a post of her own, where she said, “Nice try”.
She noted that the Bel Air property and the investment account are not part of their divorce settlement, as they are assets that the pair had owned individually.
And as for the allegation that Lee has demanded financial support, she shared a legal document in which she claims that she freed Wang from any duty to support and maintain her after their divorce.
2021 may be coming to an end, but from the sound of it, this saga certainly isn’t. Stay tuned for more.
