Remember how there was a carjacking accident back in 2018?

By which I mean a jackfruit literally dropped onto the roof of parked car near Ghim Moh market, cracking the windscreen and denting the metal exterior?

Well, another fruit-related accident happened again, except this time it involved a watermelon.

Watermelon Lands on Windscreen of a Moving Car

According to Shin Min Daily News, Mr Weng had been driving around Block 966 on Jurong West Drive 93 when an object suddenly landed on his car.

Reportedly, the incident took place last Friday (25 Feb) at approximately 9:24am.

When the object smashed into his windscreen and cracked it, the 61-year-old private-hire driver immediately got out of his car to assess the damage, and what exactly had hit his car.

Upon alighting, he noticed the viscera of a waterman splattered everywhere.

Cracked Windscreen, $1000 Repair Fees

Owing to the cracked windscreen, Mr Weng couldn’t work for a few days until the repairs were done.

The repairs to replace the damaged part cost him $1,000.

Does car insurance cover the costs of fruit-related damages?

Although it’s unclear how the watermelon had ended up on his car—especially since it had been a moving vehicle—he suspected that someone must have thrown the fruit down from one of the nearby buildings.

In short order, Mr Weng lodged a police report afterwards.

Police Suspect that Watermelon was Dropped from a Certain Height

During the interview with Shin Min Daily News, Mr Weng’s son voiced that he thinks whatever fell on his father’s car was only a fraction of a watermelon.

Plus, given the extent of the windscreen damage, his son told the police that he believed that the watermelon must have been thrown from a certain height.

He might be right about the second conjecture, because one YouTube search into dropping watermelon onto various objects shenanigans yielded a particular video from five years ago:

For some odd reason, the producer of this video decided it would be a good idea to drop a watermelon from the fifth floor onto the back of his car window.

Surprisingly, it didn’t even cause a single dent, but the clean-up will definitely be a bit of a pain.

As to why the person decided to risk their own expensive-looking car like that… Well, that’s another question altogether.

In any case, it does prove that the watermelon must have been thrown out from above the fifth floor at least, although the cracks on the windscreen gives the impression that it was a full melon or at least a hemisphere.

Considering the blunt impact that the glass absorbed, Mr Weng pointed out that it was fortunate that the watermelon didn’t land on any passers-by.

Worse, if the windscreen’s integrity hadn’t been strong enough, the shards of broken glass might have cut into Mr Weng.

The fact that no one was injured was luck in itself.

Given the gravity of the situation, the police have been alerted to the “reckless act” and a few officers were seen questioning the residents of the nearby blocks.

Investigations into the culprit are still ongoing.

Being a litter bug is one thing, but dropping fruits and endangering lives is quite another.

It’s a waste of a perfectly good fruit too…
