Resident in Whampoa Leave 2 Bags of Assorted Snacks in Lift for Neighbours

During the pandemic, countless stories of residents frustrated by coronavirus-restrictions taking their anger out on others have made the news.

Some spit on lift buttons, some fight with the people tasked with ensuring we’re safe from the virus, and others argue with each other on social media.

But our story today is a little different.

Yes, in the spirit of National Day, here’s a large dose of wholesome:

Resident in Whampoa Leave 2 Bags of Assorted Snacks in Lift for Neighbours

A Whampoa resident touched by a neighbour’s simple act of kindness has taken to Facebook to share the incident with netizens.

Amusingly, the story was shared on the Facebook group Complaint Singapore today (9 Aug).

“NOT A COMPLAINT”, the resident wrote.

The resident shared two pictures as part of the post, one of which shows two big bags of sweets and snacks hanging on handrails in a lift.

Upon first glance, netizens might have believed that someone had improperly disposed of some sweet wrappers in the lift.

But it was actually a bag deliberately placed there by a generous neighbour, filled with all kinds of goodies like chocolate bars, Fruit Plus sweets, and many more. Another big filled with the popular mamee snacks was also seen hanging on the adjacent handrail.

It didn’t take Sherlock Holmes to find out who left these bags of snacks and sweets there, as a letter was also found in the lift.

In case you can’t see it, the note said:

“Dear kind neighbours, Treat yourselves and enjoy the goodies and snacks for you and your loved ones. From a grateful and thankful neighbour of block 110. May all of us be blessed with kindness and grace.

Stay awesome for making this neighbourhood homely.”

The charitable neighbour signed the letter off with a line from what is arguably our most popular National Day song: “this is home, truly”.

According to the poster, the lift with all the goodies is located at 110 Whampoa Road.

Netizens Moved, Some Worried About Possible Spread of Virus

A majority of netizens praised the anonymous neighbour, as they were touched by their kind deed.

Choosing to give out the sweets during National Day, at a time when many coronavirus restrictions are in place, made it all the more special.

One netizen, however, was worried about the potential spread of COVID-19 through the items in the plastic bag, as several residents would be putting their hands in it.

The World Health Organisation’s guidelines indicate that there is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread through contact with food or food packaging.

“COVID-19 is generally thought to be spread from person to person,” it wrote.

Nevertheless, I think we can all agree that the world needs more people like this big-hearted neighbour, and that even during a time of extreme uncertainty and frustration, we can still find it within ourselves to make someone else’s day.
