If you know Singapore, you’ll know that altercations between people in public are… pretty common, at least from what we see on social media.
However, it’s important to remember that whatever we see on our screens may differ from reality at times.
And if you need a reason to remember why you shouldn’t take everything at face value, here’s something just for you.
And if you need an even more recent example, we’ve got you covered too.
For example, you might have seen this video posted yesterday (24 April), which went pretty viral after it made its way around the Internet.
In the video filmed at the coffeeshop of Block 455 Sengkang West Avenue, a noodle stall vendor was seen getting into an argument with a woman in Hokkien. Apparently, this woman was the mother of a customer.
During the dispute, the woman yelled at the hawker in Hokkien, “Why you beat my child? Why?!”
You started the fight first, which means that you’re in the wrong. Don’t talk so much.”
As the mother confronts the vendor, a younger girl can be seen attending to the male customer’s face quietly.
After both parties had a go at each other, the woman told the vendor to inform his manager, and remarked that she would make a police report.
The video went viral once it was posted, garnering over 96,000 views in less than a day.
Upon seeing the ruckus that was caught on camera, many netizens started bashing the vendor for his rude behaviour towards the customers.
Makes sense, right?
Well, read on and you might change your mind.
Commentary from Those Filming
Upon taking a closer look (or hear) at the video, you can hear a man, possibly the one filming the incident, saying in Hokkien, “Clearly it was the [young] man who started the fight first.”
Another man dressed in black then retaliated at the vendor by exclaiming, “You whack his head! He will bleed from his head!”
To that, the man behind the camera noted, “It was clearly the son who started it, this kind of father and mother also have.”
Video of CCTV Footage Uploaded
Around two hours later on the same day, the following video of CCTV footage was uploaded to Facebook by user Denne Goh.
In the short one-minute clip, the male customer that was standing quietly at the back in the previous video is seen arguing with the vendor.
He even starts pointing his finger in an accusatory fashion towards the vendor, and proceeds to shove a tray right across the counter and in the vendor’s face around the 45-second mark.
There was also another customer present, but he backed off once the vendor stormed out of his stall with a ladle.
Clearly enraged by the incident, the vendor rushed out of his stall with the ladle and started hitting the teenage customer repeatedly until bystanders stepped in to break the duo up.
Netizens’ Reactions
The video has since amassed over 150,000 views, much more than the first video did.
In contrast to the first video where only the aftermath of the altercation was showcased, many of the 686 comments thus far have been supporting the vendor’s actions.
Many also chastised the young customer for his disrespectful actions, and pointed out that he should not have started the conflict with the vendor regardless of how unhappy he was with the service provided. (Or maybe it wasn’t about the service lah.)
There was no audio available for the CCTV footage, so it’s hard to say what the pair were arguing about.
One user even praised the vendor, commenting, “Good! Give that ah beng a good beating.”
Another commenter said, “I would love to hire the uncle if he loses his job because of this.”
On the other hand, there were also Facebook users who questioned the quality of parenting by the customer’s parents, stating blatantly that the young man was not brought up well by his elders.
Other netizens also noted the irresponsible nature of the customer’s actions on the stall itself, with one of the comments being “That brat ruin all the ingredients and soup boiling at the counter. Who pay for the losses?”
Of course, there were also a handful of users who mentioned how the customer got off lucky, given the fact that the vendor had grabbed the ladle instead of the chopper as his weapon.

Customer Taken to Hospital
In a later update by Stomp, it was mentioned that the police have since been alerted of the incident.
The police told Stomp that they were informed about a case of voluntarily causing hurt at Block 455 Sengkang West Avenue at around 5.50pm yesterday (24 April).
It was also revealed that a 17-year-old teenager, presumably the young customer, was sent to hospital in a conscious state.
In addition to that, a 51-year-old man, most likely the vendor, is currently assisting the police with investigations.
A 17-year-old teenager was conscious when taken to hospital and a 51-year-old man is assisting with police investigations.
