Are you still a WhatsApp user?

While it seems that the younger generation nowadays tends to spend more time on Telegram as their messaging app, WhatsApp is still very popular.

Indeed, the messaging app seems to be ramping up its features to attract more users to its platform.

Recently, it rolled out instant video messages as a feature.

Here is what you need to know.

WhatsApp Introduces New Video Message Function

We have good news for those of you who like to send videos to others.

WhatsApp has released a new instant video message feature for its apps, with the clips accommodating up to 60 seconds of videos.

The video messages appear to be round bubbles, similar to what Telegram has.

The videos also have end-to-end encryption protection to keep the messages secure.

These video messages automatically play on mute if you open them in a chat. To enable the sound, you have to tap on the video.

No more being embarrassed by a loud blast of sound when you open these messages in public.

In a blog post released at the end of last month, WhatsApp introduced this feature as a “fun way to share moments with all the emotion that comes from video, whether it’s wishing someone a happy birthday, laughing at a joke, or bringing good news”.

We could not agree more. What better way to convey the present than through a video?

Sending Video Messages Will Be as Simple as Sending a Voice Message

For those tech dinosaurs, do not fret that the new video message feature will trick you.

WhatsApp has said that sending a video message will be “as simple as sending a voice message”.

You only need to tap to switch to video mode and hold to record the video.

Quite simple. Great news for those of us tasked to teach others (or parents and grandparents) how to use the latest technology.

For ease of use, WhatsApp will also allow a “swipe up to lock” function, which allows you to record the video hands-free.

This latest video function comes from WhatsApp’s “hide chats” feature, which was rolled out in May. That feature allowed users to hide their chats in a “secret” folder.

The folder can only be accessed with a password or by scanning your fingerprint.
